There are still enormous stocks of
wheat at Duluth. and u great deal of It
Is unsold, with owners offering It on a
basis of about V over tho Chicago Ma)
?Ptlo4l, Larger stocks of this groin in
the Chicago market will mean a depress

wheat Is generally slow to tako hold
"'hen heavy stocks are In evidence.
There was an absence of reports on a
big export trade In wheat yesterday be
cause of the manner In which a Balti
more firm was served by the Board of
Trade officials Wednesday when thoy
manufactured Items to suit Ion In
wheat which were without foundation.
The cash sales at Chicago yesterday
were small at 75,000 bushels and this as
wholly on milling account.
There were mutterlugs of unfavorable
crop conditions from Kansas yesterday.
The message reported dry spots In
western and southern Kansas as well as
In the northwest, and as both sections
are producers of tho wheat surplus of the
United Stated any deterioration will cause
a stampede of shorts and It will also
develop an Investment demand.
Cash wheat was i8o higher.
Cash corn was In better demand yester
day, with sales In Chicago of a5.000 bush
els. The corn fleet Is clearing from
Chicago with twelvo boats. There arc
two more to clear and a few yet to bo
loaded. The total corn to go out will not
exceed 3,000,00) misheln. It was reported
yesterday that additional vcHsel room will
bo chartered to take out largo quan

CHICAGO GRAIN AND PROVISIONS

Prices on Hoard of Trade.
CHICAGO, April 18. Bearish domestic
conditions In wheat Wero offHet today by
a bulliBh foreign situation, tho result bo-Inn-
n net unturn of 'Ac to $4c. Corn fin
ished HKc to c higher, oats had a not .
gain of 14c to HSic ana provisions a nei
advance of 10c to 2Sc.
Strength was shown by wheat from tho
start on the higher cables and the re
newed talk of prospective exports It be
ing believed that European needs will soon
bo great. Rains In France and unfavor
able crop news from parts of Russia gave
strength to the foreign situation. Tho
only variation In the vIowb of tho situa
tion In this country came in the form of
reports of Hessian fly, cinch bugs and
dry' weather In parts of Kansas, but the
effect on tho market seemed to be small,
the disturbances being confined to a nar
row area.
So completely did bull Bentlment' domi
nate the market that no depressing ef
fect was apparent from reports that
south of the Ohio river and In Oklahoma
and Texas wheat Is already bo well along
that i Is jointed. Neither did the fact
that grain shipments are now on through
the Great Lakes check the bullish tend
ency of the market. Primary' receipts
of wheat were 334,000 bushels against 357,
000 bushels a year ago. Seaboard clear
ances of wheat and flour equalled 300,000
bushels.
Corn displayed considerable strength on
buying of Importance. There was a fair
eastern demand for cash corn. The chief
offerings came from longs on realizing
sales, but these, were scattered and many
sellers later rebought on dips. Oats
showed strength In sympathy with the
other grains.
Shorts were In the market for ribs and
lard and this burdened prices. Many of
those covering today were representa
tives of foreign houses. There was also
a fair Investment demand.

CATTLE There were not enough rattlo
of uny kind In tho yards this morning to
really make a market, the total receipts
being only soventeen curs. Such cattle
n there were, wnlle not very many, still
commanded prices about steady with yes
terday. This means that beef steers are
urnnml 25o lower than the closo of lust
week.
The best heifers are around 15o lower
and killing cows 26c lower. Bulls and
stags nro also quotubly 26c lower than
last week's close, but veul calves have
been fully stoutly all week.
Stock cattlu and feedurs havo shown
Uttlo or no change, although possibly
heavy feeders are a little easier than lust
week.

HOGS The market opened In good
shapo thlB morning nnd tho sales were
made at figures that wero 10c and In
oran cases 10015c higher. Trade was
active from tho outset, and on tho re
ceipts wore so smull everything wns sold
be foil) 9:30. Light hogs, which mudo up
the turgor portion of the supply, were u
big dimn higher, whlto tho prices paid
for heavy and mixed hogs looked to be
10015c above yesterday's average. There
wero no rough heavies here, and there
won Uttlo If anything sold under 18.70,
which price was puld for several loads
of good heavies. Bulk of tho offerings
moved nt 18. 7008. 85, the latter price being
the highust puld. Thu quality was very
good, but thero was nothing luncy ubout
any of the offerings uud consequently
no toppy lights.
Tho supply this morning amounted to
about 52 cars, or 3,700 head, making the
woek'B total 43,783. This Is over 9,0iW
heavier than tlia sumo days lust week,
but bi 26,000 smuller thuu for the sumo
period a year ago.
SHEEP Today's markot on both sheep
and lambs con be beat described 03 100
l&c higher, with practically all tho offer
ing's being active sellers ut the advance.
Tho upturn In prices was duo to u light
run uud to tho fact that tho packers
wanted a few klllera to finish out thu
week. Tho total receipts amounted to
no more than ten carw, or somu 2,313
head, eight cars belrur lambs and tho
remaining two being owes. A double
deok of Mexican lambs fed In Nebraska
and weighing1 sevonty-nlno pounds went
10 inn pucKora ut wiuivi wus top
for tho day, as compared wlti? 18.45, the
highest point reached during tho early
trada yesterday. Borne, 81-pound Mexican
lambs from tho Scott's Bluff country",
tho samo as thoso at 1H.30 on Thursday,
sold up to 18.45 this morning. Among
till) -fed westerns was a bunch iLViimelnir
78 pounds at 18.40.
As a mutter of fact, thero were not
onough aged sheop here to test values,
though it wus thought If more were on
Bale they would experience fully a much
advance us In tho case of lambs. The
two loads of ewes offered wore good
sellers and brought 15.90.
Tho main feuturo of the tnulo during
the week has been 11 big drop In prices
from lost week's high level. Owing to
liberal runs prices havo hud a sagging
tendency on most days, and after con
sidering today's udvance lambs still
show a big decline, tho prlco reduction
amounting to X04Oa Moro owes, weth
ers nnd yearlings showed up during the
current week than for several weeks
past, and oh prices wero nlreudy on a
very high level at tho beginning of the
week packers saw a splendid opportunity
for a downward revision of values. Aged
sheep nnd vearllngs are now selling at
least anywliom from 60c to 76c lower
than tho rlose of last week

Bear traders felt that their position
wus reinforced by tho result of the offer-
log of tho now St. Paul 4Vi bonds. Tho
fact that oven tho comparatively high

significant of conditions to confront other
applli-nnts for capital. Sale of more than

that capital Is available, provided bor
rowers adapt themselves to present con'
dltlons. Tho new St. Paul bonds again
sold on the stock exchange nt U under s

Thero was further pressuro on some

weakness being attributed to tho belief ,'
