WEATHER HELPS CORN OUTLOOK FTornblc Conditions OTerhdoTT Possible Chnnce of Lute Plnnt I"R find Risks thrtt Go Aloair vrltli It. . . , OMAHA. April 11. 1913. A biff 'nraiY It, I2.hl.mh.p wVlnf I being placed between- the Chicago aiid Minneapolis markets. This fact came to "gm prominently Raturdnv. when there were heavy sales of that option In the unicago pit, while there were eqUBiiy heavy purchases In the large northwest ern markets. It has been usual for many years. In. me event of ravorable crop prospects in the southwest, for September wheat to rocelve considerable attention from the bears In the northwest In the way of putting out short lines. Thero Is a vast airference at the present In the May and September options at Minneapolis. Some conservative men In the trade vlow thn spread ' aB risky, to say the least, and advance the opinion that those who have put out short lines of that month In Chi cago are likely to suffer In the way of losses, as any further advance tn the price at Minneapolis will cause great un easiness and some coverinc of shorts at Chicago. ,48lA ilio present weak condition or wnsai may possibly bo followed by a sensa tional change of some kind or another, which could be brought about by crop losses In Kansas or any of the other big wheat states. This is not expecieo. oy the trade at large, and especially by the holders of options and cash wheat in tho Chicago market At this season of the year the south west generally Is to be seen oik the bull side of wheat at Chicago, but the larger speculators at this point arc now astride the speculative fence and are taking lit tle or no Interest In the wheat situation, with tho possible exception of looking on and watching for an opening on which to make purchases. It has been tho custom for several weeks for the wheat speculators, not only at Chicago, but in other markets of the world to keep a close watch on the price changes at Liverpool. Everyone knows that tn order to hold the Liverpool market up around a cer tain level It Is only necessary to use a little money and muscle, and the opin ion has gained ground In Chicago that Liverpool Is anything but legitimately strong. Cash wheat was Ho lower. Wanner and clearer weather la prom ised by tho weather authorities and this favorably will help the corn situation from the standpoint of bears, while It will Bend tho farmers Into the fields, where they will seed their corn; It will also permit some marketing of both corn and oats at times. Cash corn was Vi-Hc lower. There Is a lack of cash business In oats, aB the Argentina surplus Is pressing for sale and tho government report on the live stock situation Is viewed by the average speculator as a help to tho bulls In oats. The market on beef Btccrs yy-bs very slow and raggy from start to finish. In the first place advices from Chicago in dicated a break at that point of about 10S15c, which naturally mado buyers anxious at this point to take off tully aB much. In the second place this Yvas the first really Yvarm day of spring und tho cattle put on a much better fill ud a general thing than thoy have been doing of late. As a result buyers started out bidding 1626o lower than last week. Bellers were unwilling to take off, but In the end wero forced to make conccs lnnn thn hntir nf thn cuttle selling right around 10c lower than last week's close, Cows and heifers wero in moderate aup ply and the demand was good, with tho result that cattlo of that description gen erally commanded prices llttlo or no dlf tetent than last week, the market as a general thing being quoted steady. Thero was a very liberal sprinkling of stockers and feeders, but the domand, as usual at tho beginning of tho week, was fully steady and In some cases prccB wero Btronger as compared with lost week's close, .. . . . J6.0OtP7.25. . HOGS-A fair sited un snowed up to day, about eighty-eight cars of 6,000 head being awarded. This Is about 1.700 head larcer than a week ago, but almost 1,000 smaller than tho same day last year. Shippers and speculators started out this morning and picked up several loodB of good light and butcher weight stuff at prices that were Just about thu same as those paid Saturday. Packers, how ever, were very indifferent from tho out set and for quite a while refused tp even make offers on any kind of stuff and finally when they did start bidding tho figures they proposed were 6810o lower than at tho close of last week. As sales men had gone to the yards with the Idea that Y'alues ought at leaU to ba steady this proposed decline brought up a storm of protest, Buyers, however, showed no inclination to raise their early figures and as sellers refused to cash their hold ings on this basis the market came to a standstill as soon as speculators and shippers had filled their orders. While the outside buyers remained In the yards all morning they were very light buyers after the first rounds and 11 o'clock found about two-thirds of tho offerings still In first hands. A little later salesmen began to rea lize that packers wero not very anxious to buy boga and that If the BUpply whs to bo sold It would bo at tho buyers' figures, so that when thn bulk of the hogs began to move it was at a 6l0u decline. Tho movement Yvas slow all the way through, and at mid-day thero were still several loads of heavy and mixed hogs unsold. The majority of the early sales was made at W.W(j.9.00 with a top of J9.06, while the bulk of the packers' purchases landed at a spread of J8.sya8.90. Tho fact that thero wero more heavy and mixed loads on sale today than there wero Sat urday cheapens the average a little, so tnat on tne wnoio me average is jusi about a nickel below the close of last week. The bulk of all the sales could be quoted at JS.85ij8.SG, with the long strings at J8.85 and J8.90. SHEEP The week opened out with tlia market liberally supplied and uulto nat urally the packers tried to place some check on the rising tendency (if prices. Trade was slow from the outset, with buyors bidding- 10Q 16o lower on lambs and Sf5c lower on aged sheep. The aelllng side of the trade was not In sym pathy with any decline, consequently held out for better treatment. Some llttlo time elapsed before any business of consequence was transacted, and Yvhat sheep ajid lambs changed hands then were on a busts steady to easier on lambs and 1016c lower on aged sheep. Slowness featured tho general trade all the morning, and a complete clearance was not effected until a later hour than usual. During the first hours of the forenoon some Mexican lambs were good enough to bring J6.60. Fed western lambs sold up to J8.C5, being practically steady with the close of last week. Th lamb re ceipts Included a fairly large sprinkling of shorn offerings, among which were some 84-pound clipped lambs that wont to the packers at J7.78. Three cars ot clipped yearlings changed hands at $7. and a bunch of clipped yearling ewes brought J4.90. Very feYv wooled ewes or wethers were picked up during the open ing rounds, ond among what were sold then was a sale of fed western ewes nt J8.90, as compared with a top of J7 at the end of last week.
