Only 20,000 bushels orcaBh wheat were sold In the Chicago market yesterday. This was mo renuu or tno absence of wlr service, together with the fact that railroads ure unable to handle the frcluht. The bull In wheat waa never known to remain under the Influence of a bear without making pronounced resistance. The Purdue University Agriculture sta tion of Indiana says the chinch bug Is present In the Indiana fields every year and that It now stands the farmer well to bo on the watch, as they are known to exist. Hessian flies hnvo been dlsooverod in Kansas. A message from Wichita, Kan., says there are Uesslau tiles In Jefferson, Jackson, Shawnee, Atchison and Potta wattmte countlos. A report was circulated yesterday that tho Department of Agriculture, in IhsU; m us usurps on lorm reserves recomiy showing 154.000.000 bushels, had not In cluded sed requirements for spring wheat, which are about 27,000,000 bushels. On this basis It was assumed by a great many that actual stocks on the farms were $143,000,000 bushels. A hurried read ing of the crop reorted for March would lead to this assumption, but a careful analysis gives an entirely different Im pression. The departmunt has never, In issuing a report on farm reserves, an nbunced that Its figures were exclusive of seed requirements, which average about 45,000,000 bushels in winter and 27, 000,000 bushels In spring. Cash wheat was unchanged. The situation In corn looked somewhat weaker yesterday and thern were moder ate prlca losses. Instead of shippers taking the ca5h article they were offer ing to resell. Eastern advices received regarding the cash situation thele were to the effect that dealers wero well sup plied. There Is a general belief that the larger holders of the May future at Chicago are working off that month, and taking September Instead. Cash corn was Unchanged to V4c higher. The In ability of packers to move meat products promptly naturally reauces mo uvumuu for killers of all kinds, thus bringing about a lower tendency of values. For the week to date tho supply totals 61.572. over 9.000 heavier than the same days last week and less than 1,000 short of the corresponding nv8 'In tfact that advices from eastern markets were rather bearish, shippers and speculators started out puy ing nog at figures that were just about steady with Thursday. Packers, how ever, were of the opinion that local val ue ought to be a little lower, and their first bids were anywhere from a to 6c below yesterday's figures. .Sales men opposed this reduction strongly, bi't In the end the majority of the oftenrigs changed hands at figures that were weak to a nlckot lower As soon as buyers had picked up enough hogs to partially till their orders prices slumped off rapidly. Up to this time the movement had ben rather slow, but at thU further declluo trade stopped almost entirely. On the extremo close shippers and spec ulators cleaned up what hogs were still unsold at figures that were Just about a nickel lower than yesterday's averuge trade. As a whole the trade can be quoted weak to B cents lower. Bulk ot the hogs sold at $8.SOfc.8& with a sprink ling of good quality lights above and a few sales of tho heavier grades below. A load of prim light weight went to packers at $8.95, Just 2 cents better than yesterday's top. There wa a fairly large percentage of heavy hog here today, and unless the buyer hap pened to have an order for Just such a load these kinds were very hard to move. This waa noticeable on the olose, when It was Impossible to get over $8.75 for anything weighty. The demand has not been so good of late because of the un certainty of eastern shipments, and pack ers are afraid of loading up with any thing like a heavy supply with rullroad traffic In Its present disabled condition No At Sfc Pr No. av EVb. As the receipts, however, were unusually light for a Frldny, thero was considerable competition between buy- .era for what little stuff was on sale. consequently an active trade was done nt good strong figures. A bullish factor was tho fact that packers' purchases have been light all the week, even lighter than last week and though their ordors this morning were limited, they seemed to be In urgent neod of n few killers.
