WHO SWIPED THE PENDANT?
IteniiirUiilile Ulnmouil Mystery
Worthy or Attention of
ltenl HlirrlocUii.
Frankly, we don't understand how any
thief could steal a diamond pendant front
11 lady's stocking. No modest thief would
think of attempting such n thing. Much
as he might lovo diamonds, he would lovo
virtue more, nnd ho would search for
wealth where It could hu found without a
shock to tho proprieties. Men are bold
mid bad, hut they do drnw the line some
where. In general outline, this was the derense
of the National Surety company when It
was sued by a lady In New York for the
value of her diamond pendant. The com
'Piiny contended that the lady carried her
Jewelry In her stocking, that she had said
so herself, and therefore the theft under
such conditions was Impossible. Apart
from a natural bashfulnesa on the part
of thieves, It seemed hard to' believe that
the pendant could have been extracted
from such a hiding place without the
lady's knowledge, and while ye ourselves
are without Information upon thin point,
and would scorn to seek It, tho argument
appears to bo a good one.
Tho lady's reply addod a further com
plication to tho problem. She ndmltted to
tho court that she usually carried her
diamonds In her stocking, nnd very un
comfortable It must bo to have diamonds
In your stocking. Personally, we prefer
the pawnshop, but then tastes differ. But
on this occasion tho diamonds were not
In her stocking or they could not have
been lost, seeing UiAt nho always woro
tlino garters upon each stocking, al
though sho did not stato why she favored
so largo a cargo of garters. She had put
tho diamonds Into a Jewel box and put
tho Jewel box on tho dresser In her hotel
bedroom, and when she woke next morn
ing they were gone. No one had been In
tho room except her husband, and he left
before his wlfo awoke In order to attend
to some of the silly things that men do
downtown.
It seems quite n hard enso to decide,
and our sympathies are with the Judge,
We cannot see that the lady was under
any compulsion to carry her diamonds
In her stocking, and even a surety com
pany could hardly expect her to wear her
stockings In bed Just for tho sake of
guarding her Jewelry. Rut it might be
well to find out how her husband spent
tho day. Personally, wo don't take much
stock In husbands anyway. San Fran
