Sharp Contest on Wheat Market Be

GETTING READY TO PLANT C0HN

Increased Arrrnae.
OMAHA, March II, 1913.
Decided weakness developed In wheat
at the outset yesterday, on a rally In
the May price to 94o and over, a rather
sharp content for control of the market
developed, a group of Chicago traders
on the buying side and tho commission
housen representing tho former heavy
holder of tho May and cash wheat doing
the selling. Minneapolis had a run of
over 300, Cars again yesterday and stocks
there continued to Increase moderately,
200,000 bushels so far this week. Kansas
City reported the cash wheat demand
slow and mills looking for lower prices,
Tho firmness In northwest markets was
not easy to understand yesterday unless
It was support from Chicago houses. The
forecast for more rain and snow for' tho
wheat belt Is extremely bearish. The
only new feature In the Chicago situation
was the claim of cash sales of 2o0,000
bushels, the bullc of It said to be taken
by export houses with Baltimore lonnoc
tlone. Omaha sold seven boatloads of
wheat fo export. ',
Some traders are Inclined to advljo
sales on hard spots believing It will take
something very important In tho way of
foreign wheat buying to offset the natuiai
bearish Influences In stftiit. The Mlnlit
apolls flour output last week Increased
3t,800 barrels. The output for the vek
ending March 8 was 349,110 barrels,
against 3O3,M0 In 1912. 307,006 In 1911 and
281.455 In 1910. This week the same num
ber of mills are In opeiatlon, namely,
nineteen out of twenty-three, but at the
present the prospect Is that one or noro
may be closed before the week Is over.
In the corresponding week last year the
production was 306.W0 barrels. Tho grain
trade at Minneapolis Is very optimistic
as to crop prospects In tho northwest
thin spring. A heavy, wet snow and rain
fell over most of the thrco states last
week and this assures ample moisture to
start the crop.
Cash wheal was unchanged.
Farmers In the com belt nre vrrv btlM'
arranging for seed grain and planning for
acreagn ror tne spring work, it is evi
dent that corn will get more attention
than ever unless the Question of seed
prevents an Increase In area planned for
mat crop, some corn seed that una oeen
tested proves anything but satisfactory,
and If much of It proves to be poor there
Is likely to be a shortage of seed. Cash
corn wos uncnanged to itc lower.
The oats niarknt wilb verv narrow VPS
terday. The trade In onts Is held In check
uy uie uncertainty oi mo action in corn,
Cash oats were unchanged.
Clearances were 4SO.O00 bushels of corn
and 8.000 bushelB of oats and wheat and
flour equal to 312,000 bushels. Liverpool
closed unchanged on wheat and mJ(id
lower on corn.
Primary wheat receipts were 700,000
and shipments of 622,000 bushels against
receipts last year of 285,000 bushels and
shipments of 219,000 bushels.
Primary corn receipts were 892,000 bush

Primary oats receipts were 625,000 bUBh

CHICAGO GRAIN AND PROVISIONS
Fentnres of the TrndlnK nnil Closing;
Prices on Board of Trade.
CHICAGO, March 14. Extremely fav
orable crop advices today tended to put
wheat on the down grade. Closing prices,
though steady, were tttMc under last
night. Corn showed a net decline of
ic to He. oats a loss of UiWiC to
and provisions a setback of to 20c.
According to a high authority the out
look for wheat Is the best In years. In
many localities In the winter crop belt
the plant was said to be In almost per
fect condition. Moreover, the weather
map showed abundant molsturo in all
directions. Under these clrcumstunces.
bears took control of the market early
in the session and held their advantage
tlD?saBppelarance of the recent export de
mand acted as a further bearish In
fluence. On the other hand the possibll
lty of a substantial renewal of foreign
purchasing at the present level rvea to
check enthusiasm on the part of short
"aboard clearances or wheat and flour
eaualled 312.000 bushels. Primary receipts
of wheal ; were 700,000 bushels, against
885.000 bushels a year ago.
Liquidation by speculative holders was
the feature In corn. and. Influenced to
a greater extent than usual
at cereals. Abundance of fWPP'n.K P!
mand had much to do with bringing
about thVbearish feeling that prevailed.

HOaS The supply was very liberal this
morning and the market opened out slow
and dull with packers making an effort
to force u big break In values. Some
light hogs sold early were Just a llttld
lower than yesterday's general market,
but the number of sales made on this
basis was very limited, racaers siurieu
nut trvlns- to force u decline of nearly
ten cents, but as sellcrH were not In
clined to swallow this without a fight,
It was rather late In the morning before
anything or conBcquenco naa peen none,
nnri nn until 10:30 thtmis were at a stand
still. About this time, however, the mar
ket became noticeably better and In the
end tho bulk of the hogs sold at figures
that were nearly five lower. After busi
ness once gut started It did not take long
to clean up practically everything, but
owing to the slowness uuring ino tun

last of the hogs had changed hands.

HHEEPFor a Friday receipts were
very liberal, us some flfty-three curs, or
14.200 head, arrived ut the yards. A con
siderable proportion of the receipts was
consigned through to eastern Points,
leaving only a moderate supply for the
ocal trade. The buying force was In
no hurry to fill orders, and apart from
weighing up a few odds and ends, noth
ing else of any consequence took place
during the first hours of the forenoon.
As a large share of the receipts come In
pretty wet. the buyers considered the of
ferlngs in bad shape, ond what few bids
they made during the opening rounds
were anything from 26o to 40o lower than
the general run of sales on Thursdiij,
On the other hand, Boilers were not In
cllned to part with their holdings at
such a decline, so a good part of the
forenoon wore away before tho bulk or
the stuff began to move scaleward.
It was nearly midday before buyers
and sellers agreed on a trading basis and
after considering the very, wet condition
of the fleeces the sales wore practically
steady to a dime lower than on Thursday,
On paper figures Indlcuto n reduction of
85tf40c as compared with yesterdays
trade. Among tho sales was a bunch of
handy-weight Mexican lotnbs averaging
around seventy-two pounds that sold "it
tM0. Today's slight reduction In price
makes the closing trado for the week
little, If any, better on lambs, while ewes
are possibly a little stronger than a week
ago.
Aa previously stated, a big run arrived.
While the receipts wore about equal to
those of last Friday, they fell consider
ably below what were here two week
ago and a year ago. Lamb again made
up the big part of the supply, and on the
whole wore of very good quality as com
pared with the first days of the week.
Only about five cars of ewes were on
sale, there being a light sprinkling of
yearlings and practically no wethers at
all.
