In an early letter of advice yesterday
one firm In the trade advised caution
against pressing the selling side of wheat
too far on the breaks. Just suoh a sit
uation developed before midday, when
the May price touched 89S4c and July
88c. There was moderate buying lor
a rally uy conservative Interests In the
Chicago trade.

ket the last hour, running the May pnea
up arouna wc. All tne options were up
lc from the extreme low point of the
morning and closed near thn toD. The
neavy run of wheat to Minneapolis con-
tinues. Wheat stocks there have in
creased 170,000 bu. so far this week, where
mey were decreasing a year ago.
Reports irtve no indication of a re
vival in the flour trade. Certain houses
in Chicago, credited with the task of
liquidating La Salle street holdings of
wheat, sold freely again yesterday. Cash
wheat sales In Chicago yesterday reached
135,000 bushels, including 15,000 bushels of
nard wheat, to be sent to Baltimore.
Perhaps yesterday's closing rally waa
due In a way to the extreme bearish-
ness and decline of Tuesday and the
bear pressure exerted on Wednesday. It
is more than probable that such export
sales as are confirmed will prove to be
largely the result of orders placed be
fore the Tuesday break In Chicago.
Those closest In touch with the export
situation are much In doubt about a
natural demand of any Importance con
tinuing. Shorts were timid yesterday
and ready to take profits, which aided
the rally materially.
Cash wheat was unchanged to ftc
lower.
There Is wholesome fear in the Chicago
corn trade of what the big eastern hold
ers of May corn may do In that market.

The fact that such holdings exist kcp
short sellers In check. It was fairly well
understood in the onen market vesterdav
that much of the heavy short selling by
Chicago leaders Tuesday was quietly off
set by haying through brokerage firms
Inter. The market at no time showed
any decided weakness, and failed to sell
under the Tuesday closing figures at
any time and late In the session there
was a fairly strong upturn, closing at
the top.

The oats market had a decided break

CHICAGO GRAIN ANU PROVISIONS
Features of the Trading: nnd Closing;
Prlcca nn nonrd ot Trailo.
CHICAGO, March IS. Despite an active
export demand, wheat today showed
weakness. Docauso ot targe cauies, large
rnrelntn and promise of rain and snow.
Closing prices, though steady, were Ho
to Uo net lower. Latest trading left
oorn a . shade to U?4o down, oats Via
off to a like amount up, and provisions
varying from 7Vtc declino to an aavance
of 124c.
Wheat bulls faced disappointing caoics
at the outset. Ruslan receipts were said
to be Increasing. Argentine snipmenis
promised to be larger and there were
sltrns of a normal crop for India. Fur
thermore, receipts northwest of here were
liberal. '
KMntir Nnlpn wra reDortcd lleht. In
addition, the chances of winter killing
were said to nave practically vanisnea
and prospects of a record-breaking crop
were Increased by forecasts of additional
moisture.
Omaha sent word of export aales of
t thn best nrlces for tho crop and
there were also sales here and elsewhere
for ocean shipment. Nevertheless, the
roonvprv from the low point reached
early proved insufficient to lift the mar
ket again to last night's level.
Seaboard clearances of wheat and
flour equalled 169,000 bushels. Primary
receipts of wheat were 752,000 bushels,
uirntnfit.2cft.nnn hufthels a year ago.
Heavy local selling pressure weakened
COm. INOIWIUIHIIIIIUIIIB HIU BMiwDnu-
ness of the bears, however, holders were
ahln to prevent more than a moderate
decline. Oats were held steady by
,i.,iatinllv crnnd rnnh demand.
Attempts to realize profits unsettled
tho provision market. Tho effect, how
ever, did not altogether offset the In
fluence of higher prices for hogs.

CATTLE There was no great change
tn the eattla market today. Receiuti

total for the four duya 18,tw0 head, a gain
ot over 1,000 head as compared with tne
corresponding nays last ween, put smaller
than it year ago by about 600 head. Thero
was a very fair demand for beet steers
and cattle of good quality, and handy
weights sold very freely at Rood, steady
prices. On the other hand heavy cattlo
were more or less neglected the same as
they- have been all week, and the feellnc
on that kind ot stuff was easier, with
Haies in some cases noxinr lower.
Cows and heifers wero In fair demand
and they generally commanded stesay
prices, mere Dciiig very little change in
the markot In either direction:.
Btockers und feeders yere In good de
mand the same as they have been til
week, but the trade was hardly as brisk
as It, was yesterday. Prices, however,
remained about tho same, the market as
a general thlrig being quoted stcudy by
sellers.

Sellers began to do business compara

advance, resulting in a free movement
throughout Iho market. While there was
a good strong demand for everything ot
tered, It was plainly evident that the.
choice grades of both sheep and lambs
of handy weights wero most sougm

bought up first
Light-weight Mexican lamns aoia ui

hands at 37.50. There were few wethers
of any consequence on sale.
Trade for the week started out siow

supplies, on Monday and Tuesday, nut
with a slight falling of the receipts and
a material improvement in tne general
situation at most live stock centers on
Wednesday and today whatever loss
there was has been fully recovered, pre

last week's close. .

HOUK Th4i local buying demand has
been Improving steadily of late and to
day. In splto of the fair sized supply on
hand, values scored a big advance.
Friers quoted early wero around loo

nigner man weanesaay. iTmie m
fairly active from the outset and aside
from a few loads that, owing to last
night's storm, wero late In arriving,
everything had been cleaned up In good
season. The bulk of the sales landed ct
J8.65Ati.66. as against yesterday's bulk
of J8.4OS8.ti0, and a top price of J8.70 waa
paid. Just 16c higher than yesterday's
best price. Aside from a few loads ot
rough mixed and heavy hogs the quality
of the offerings were very good. Notwith
standing the fact that receipts have been
fairly liberal all week? prices have re
gained all that they lost Monday with
some to spare and values are now a big
nickel higher than at the close ot last
WAk'compared with the last few weeks,
today's receipts were rather liberal,
some 151 cars or 10,700 head being re
ported in. This Is 1.S0Q larger than last
week and 1,000 heavier than two weeks
ago, but almost 10,000 smaller than on tho
