OMAHA. Fob. 20, 1913.
The action of the wheat market for
several days past shows that the longs
fear the probable rains In the winter
wheat belt, which would causa a general
unloading by longs, as well as heavy
short selling. Quietly, but persistently,
the May wheat has come Into the open
on all the hard spots and there has been
rather free selling of July as well.
The May option held up best, however,
yesterday. Rains are needed In the
spring wheat country In order to facili
tate farm work, which will soon com
mence with favorable weather. Opinions
have been expressed by wheat holders
of the northwest that only 10 per cent of
the plowing In three states was finished
last fall, but one of the best authorities
In the Chicago market with connections
throughout the northwest country, says
that his advices show tully SO per cent
of plowing has already been done, nnd
that the seeding of wheat this spring will
be earlier than usual In consequence

What aro the holders to do with this

Cash snlna of whent In Chlcaso VCSter
day were small at 25,000 bushels, which Is
a poor showing for a market witn aa
large a territory tributary to it as Chi
cago enjoys. Cash wheat, Uc lower.
It was the gossip of the corn pit yes
terday that one large trader, who bought
May and July corn all morning, dumped
the greater part of it at the close and
was responsible for the late weakness.
Pome claimed that he was still long,
and that professionals, who are mostly
bearish, had out a little short corn last
night The bulls are said to be long
12,000,000 bushels of corn that has been
bought from hedgers, and a liberal per
centage will probably be delivered In

Oats followed other grains In their price
changes and closed fractionally lower

Clearances of wheat and flour were

CHICAGO GRAIN AND PROVISIONS
Feature of the Trading; and Closing;
Prices on Hoard of Trade.
CHJCAGO, Feb. 20. Revival of export
demand In the west for shipment by way
of the gulf gave the wheat market today
an upward slant. The close was neroua
at a shade to Aftc over last night.
Corn made a net gain of HtfVic and oits
1-160 to ViSVJc. In provisions tho out
come varied from 57Ho decline to a
rise of 2Hc.
Owing to rain or Bnow extending from
Oklahoma to South Dakota, wheat at
first took a down turn. The market wis
bearlshly affected aUo by predictions that
world shipments for the week wouid be
large. For the time being northwestern
reports of decreased arrivals formed tho
only offset In favor of the bulls.
News that foreigners were buying wntat
In Omaha to bo routed via New Orleans
effected a complete change lr,' pit senti
ment. The result was to add quickly o
to prices here, and this notwithstanding
that a cold wave was putting an epd to
the deposit of molsure in portlona of the
winter crop belt. However, a group of
big houses with free orders to sell at any
further advance brought about a feeling
of uncertainty as trading came to ul
end, Primary receipts were 762,000 bubn
els. against a holiday last year. Clear
ances of wheat and flour equaled 417,000
bushels.
Corn found friends when wheat began
to ascend. Besides, there were com
plaints that rural hauling was hauJI
capped by the 'eoftness of roads. Oats
were firmer on aocount of belief that the
weather was unfavorable for marketing,
though lees so than for corn.
Provisions responded late In the ses
sion to the strength shown by grain.
Earlier the bears were In control be
cause of the liberal run of hogs here and
at other leading points.

HOGS Receipts this morning footed un
about 201 oars, or H.30O head, being somo
1.3TO heavier than last Thiirsduy ana about
I, 500 larger than both two weeks ago and
a year ago.
First bids this morning were a flat
idlmo lower than yesterday's averse
trade. Tho opening rounds wero extremely
slow, and It was about, 10 o'clock beforo
anything of eonsrxjnonco had boon done
Saltvimou made a determined effort tr
force buyers to ralso their early bids, but
tho best thev could do was to got them
up to a Mi'lOo lower basis, nnd It wns on
thln.lnvol that tho hulk ot tho hogs wera
sold. .Shippers amV speculators nppar,
yiltly , hud light orders, and what the
bought was' lit about tho samo notches ss
other buyers' purchases. Tho market waa
slow o,nd draggy from start to finish,
and. It ws Into In tho day before, tho
ynrds woro cleared.
Bulk of tho offerings rhnnged hands at
$7.9Mr8 00, ns against $8.00418.10 on Wednes
day, and some real good hogs brought n.i
high nn $8.06. In making comparisons in
tho figures for tho two days It will bo,
well to remember that yesterday's clos
was somewhat lowrtr than tho early trade.
The majority of tho early-sales ranged
around $8.0t)8.10, while tho later ones
wero largely at $8.001,8.06, This would
make today s values a dime lowor than
Wednesday s early figures and only So" bo
low tho close, or HflOc lowor than the cly
crngo trade.

SHEEI Receipts of lambs nnd sheen
this morning were qulto moderate for ft
Thursday, there being only ahout twcntyi
four cars or 6,0000 head accounted for, an
compared with 7,674 head a week ago anrt
14,051 head two weeks ago, Tho supply!
wns a llttlo lnrgor than three weeks ngot
and one year ago. For tho first four
days of tho week the receipts foot up In
the nelghborrhood of 38,200, being around
9,380 hear short of the same days last
week, but 8,210 head more than during
the corresponding tlmq Inst year. As ta
quality today's supply wns not qulto as
good ns on Wednesday.
As on tho provtous days of the week
tho big bulk of tHo supply consisted ot
lambs. Tho demand seemed a little bet
ter than yesterday, resulting In a fairly
active trade at steady to strong prlcss.
While lambs made up the big end of tho
receipts thoy were only In moderate sup
ply at that, and It was chiefly on that
account trade allowed a little strength,
this morning. Among the early sales
wore somo fed western Iambs at $8.50.
As a mattor of fact there wero scarcely
enough ogod sheop offerings to make ft
market, thcro being only about seven
cars of sheep on solo. Buyers all acted
as If they wanted muttons? and as a con
sequence an active trade was done at
prices anywhere from strong to 1015a
higher. A small bunch of fed western
owes reached ad high as $6,90, and a load,
of shorn ewes went to tho scales at $(.25.
Two loads ot fed western wethers weigh
ing around 119 pounds sold at $6.60. Tho
light supply was disposed of at an early;
hour.
