. , OMAHA, Feb. 1?. 1913.
. . J' nt ninde b" wheat traders last
nislit was that prices rally too easily
nrter the breaks to make short sales safe
uxcept on sharp bulges. One of the big
,n"rr! who haB been bearish for months,
salil last night that he lutd 'been on tho
. . .?.lde r l,lc market for several days
lot liking tho action of the market and
Uelievlng that most of the pressure has
come from tho bears. He also made tho
point that the moisture conditions. In the
southwest are not such to make short
"ales safe until there' are good general
rains Hears took tho position that the
trade was too light for bulls to carry the
mnrket up very far, and believe that
the largest holders will take advantage
of all bulges to sell. According to a
statement made yesterday by Todd W.
lewls, the Minneapolis grain man, the
Washburn-Crosby and Plllsbury concern!
each have 1,000,000 barrels of flour sold
and the Consolidated Milling company
600,000 barrels hold for which they ore un
able to secure shipping directions, In
order to send the flour to points of dis
tribution. This fact may be called the
greatest bear factor In the market of the
country.
Thoi-e who have bought goodly amounts
of flour for future delivery believe tho
winter plant la certain to pull through
and show good results and for this rea
son they are not furnishing shipping
directions and many of them will refuse
to take flour. In case prices continue to
decline. From day to day large sales of
exporters aic heard of, but tho transac
tions at Chicago yesterday amounted to
only 40,000 bushels. Canadian exporters
have made a great .deal of noise about
tho big buslnoss that has been done at
Winnipeg, Montreal and Toronto from
day to day and one concern alone said
that total transactions In those markets
were fully 230,000 bushels. This was
doubted by those In the trade who are
well posted. Cash wheat was unchanged.
Corn traders were nurprlsed at the ac
tion of the Armour house In selling May
corn when the market was weakest and
later hedging by buying the July option,
nulls said last night that corn, now
being on an export basis, it will not be
easy to maintain declines below R2c for
May. One cash handler said they had
already sold so much corn that they did
not care to sell more until they got
fairly cleaned up.
Cash corn Uc higher to Mo lower.
A few oats traders who were bullish
nre talking lighter receipts for some
time and say that the country purchases
have fallen off materially elnce prices
declined.
Cash oats unchanged.
Clearances of com wero 153,000 bushels,
and wheat and flour equal to 64G.0OO bush
els. The close at Liverpool on wheat was
unchanged to He higher, and on corn
unchanged to Ho lower.
Primary wheat receipts were 821.000
bushels and shipments 620,000 bushels
against receipts last year of fio",000 bush
els and shipments pf 301,000 bushels.
Primary . corn receipt were 1,528,000
bushels and shipments 1,015,000 bushels
against receipts last year of 1.077.000
bushels and shipments of 738,000 bushels.
Primary oat receipts wore 904,000 bush
els and shipments 643,000 bushels against
receipts last year of 720,000 bushels and
shipments' of 440.000 bushels.

CHICAGO GRAIN AND PROVISIONS
lVrttnren oj Hie Trnillnir And CIomIiik
l'rlrra on Ilonnl of Trade.
CHICAGO, Feb. 18. Attempts today to
get up a Hessian fly Bcare In tho wheat
market here fell flat. Closing prices wore
weak, c to 9io under last night. Corn
finished Httc to c down and outs vary
ing from 4c off to a shade advance. The
outcome In provisions was unchanged to
7Hc higheT.
Prospect of a turn to rain or snow In
tho west liad much to do with counteract
ing the efforts of the wheat bulls. In ad
dition, a leading crop expert declared thut
talk of tho multiplication of the Hessian
fly at this time of the year, with tempera
tures as they have been in Nebraska, was
nonsense. Accordingly, a slight advance
wlilch had beou based partly on fears re
garding tho winter crop and partly on tho
strength of foreign markets was more
than wiped out
Interest in war rumors waned when it
was brought to light that compared wltli
a month ago Chicago prices for wheat
were relatively 2V4o cheaper than Liver
pool, and yet there had been no rcifent ex
port buying here of any consequence.
Total clearances today of wheat and flour
nt tho sealmard wero equal to 546,000 bu.
Primary receipts were 821,000 bu., against
057,000 bu. a yoar ago.
Falling off Jn. eastern demand pulled
down com. The deferring of labor trou
bles waB hld responsible. OatH wore sus
tained by purchasing on the part of eleva
tors and by shorts consequently being
forced to covor.
Shortage of hogs at western centers
made a rising market for provisions. The
volume of trade, nevertheless, was above
the average.

the natural course of events In the mar

Even the news that threatened strike of

Tho cotirso of prices was disappointing

has been such a long series of unfavor

bullish factor was a novel sensation. The
failure of the market to make a greater
response was attributed to the remaining
uncertainties of the general situation.
Tho rather violent selling movement of
the last hour was linked with disquieting
rumors concerning J. P. Morgan's state
of health. The departure for Europe to

a basis for these rumors.

110C1S Hecolpts this morning-totaled
up about 243 cars, or 17,000 head, about
2,000 smaller than last Tuesday, but al
most 2,000 heavier than both two weoks
and one year ago.
In the fuce of a somewhat generous
supply buyers' opening hlds wore fully SO
10c hlRher. Seeing tho upward trend of
things salesmen held on for still better
money, and. while this made the opening
rounds rather slow, they finally ttot
nearly all they asked for, the hulk of tho
supply moving at figures that were u big
10c higher, and In souio oases even mur,.
than that, some good quality light and
butcher weight stuff being as much u
15c higher. Quality was rather uneven,
theie being soma leal good hogs hi. Voll
as a percentiigo of common stuff on
sale. Aside from tho slowness during the
early trade, tho movement was active
until the close, when values caned Oif a
llttln and buyers wore lather lmllf fcent
low aril a tralnloud that was u llttlu latu
In arriving. In the end, however, a clear
ance was made at a reasonably call)
hoiil.
Tho bulk of the hogs sold at $8. lot 8. 15,
while a range of JS.OoiftS.ZO tultca in put
tlielly everything. Some good quality
light and butcher weights sold as high
us J8.25, 15a above yesterday's top. It
might be mentioned that both Puckers
and shippers wero free buyers of must
any kind of stock, nnd as the petccntagc
of big heavies was very small, there was
very little discrimination ngalnst any
particular grnue.
