Higher Prices at Liverpool Seem to '
Awaken Little Interest.
SHORTS HEAVY CORN BUYERS
Reports from ArRrntlnn Arc to Ef

OMAHA. Feb. 6. 1913.
Wheat refused to rtspond to the. higher
Liverpool cables yesterday, which , was
runsed by the resumption of hostilities In
the far enBt, the overbalancing factor'
being goodly Increases In the European
and Canadian visible supplies ns well as
In the world's available. The strength
In corn was a help to wheat, but the
buying In the latter market was of a
weak-hearted character. Minneapolis and
Winnipeg both showed a ' relatively
stronger feeling than Chicago. There
was a lack of help In the matter of cash
sales, as only 65.000 bushels changed
hands at Chicago. Montreal reported
twelve loads of Manitoba wheat for ex
port and a message from there says that
bldB for forty additional loads were close
to a working basis. After the close the
seaboard reported thirty-two loads as
sold to exporters and most of the latter
was of the hard winter variety. Cash
wheat was UB'Ho lower.
Although the Buenos Atrcs corn market
was closed to business yesterday on
account of a holiday In that country, a
private cahie received at New York said
that the heat In the southern hemisphere
was Intense. While this pleco of news
was known to but a few on the board
of trade yesterday, there was heavy buy
ing by shorts In the belief that th
Buenos Aires market for corn Is HkeV
to show a sharp advance today, this be
cause of unfavorable conditions now pre
vailing there. The Armour Grain com
pany Is believed to bo either personally
long on a largo line of May corn or Is
acting for some large speculators, pos
slbly exporters. In addition to the hold
ings In the Armour house, the "cotton
crowd" In New York Is still long with u
big line of May corn, and these people
continue to add to their holdings on all
weak spotR. Chicago corn men, os well as
some In the corn trade at the seaboard,
advance the opinion that the losses to
the corn crop In Argentina have been
much largel- than generally reported,
which they say has already been reflected
In the reduced shipments from that far
away country. Speculative sentiment on
corn was more bullish yesterday than nt
any time during the present bull cam
paign and any fiunther hardening In
values will doubtless gain new converts
to the bull side of the market. Cash corn
was unchanged to Uc lower.
Shorts and Investors gave the oats mar
ket considerable attention yesterday and
prices were held up by them. Cash oats
unchanged.

CHICAGO (iHAI.V AND PROVISIONS
Kent tires of Hie TruilliiK iiml Closing;
I'rlees on Hoard of Trntlf.
CHICAGO. Feb. 5,-Rallin In the Pun
Jaub and promise of relief from drouth In
other parts of India turned wheat prices
today down grade. Tho market, though
firm at the close, was Wflic under last
night. Corn finished "8V4c off. oats at
a decline of HftUo and provisions varying
from 6c down to an advance of 2Mc
Wheat bulls found themselves at a dis
advantage not only because of the. bear
ish news from Indlu, but on account of
signs of heavier shipments by Australia
and Argentina, which tended also to de
press the market. Fresh threats of a re
duction In tho milling output at Minneap
olis told likewise against quotations, and
so. too. did weakness of corn.
Late In the day wheat developed a little
strength owing to reports that soil east
of the Mississippi has been moisture
heavy and that a prolonged freeze would
cause damage of wide extent. It was
conceded, however, that west and south
west the winter crop was In this respect
hcaicely. If at all. In danger.
"Corn suffered from general selling, the
. lesult of showers' Improving tho prospect
of good yields In Argentina. Country
dealerH were reported to be hedging here
on a big scale. The unusual sire of the
. discount of cash under May was said to
Je an Incentive.
Oats weakened with corn and In conse-
quence of pressure from elevator con
cerns that recently had been, giving the
market support. '
Concentrated buying as the result of a
huge decrease In slaughtering this winter
as compared with a year ago lifted pro
visions early, but subsequently the ad
vance disappeared.. Heavy unloading
credited to a leading packer was respon
sible for the reaction.

Bank Clearings for January
The remarkable expansion Id payment through the banki, u redacted In bank
clearings, of the closing month of 1912 at practically all leading- centers of the couu
trv, was fairly well maintained Id January, the total, according to statistics compiled
by R. G. Dun & Co., which Include return from 11!S cities, aggregating $l,247,70l,72a,
an lucretse of 7.5 per cent, as compared with tho same month last year and of 12.3
per ceot. compared with the corresponding month In 1011. Krnry section, exeapt
New Kogland, into which the statement Is divided shows gain, and In soma, notably
the Southern, Central and Weitern States, It la Yerjr larga", reflecting clearly the
maintenance of commercial and Industrial activity In every direction. Although com
parative dulnees was a feature In the stock and other speculative markets at New Tar It,
that dty reports a gain of C.7 per cent, over last year and B.fi per cent, over 1811,
Indicating a gratifying volume of transactions In ordinary hnalataa channel!, whlls
the total of all outalde dtlea la 11.9 per cent, and 17.0 per cent,, respectively, larger
than In either preceding year. In Now JSngland hank clearings at Boston abow soma
contraction, but most of the other cities report more or lefa Increase and the section,
as a whole, as a result of the favorable .returns from Springfield, Worcester, Hartford,
Providence and other centera, makes a fairly satisfactory comparison with both 1913
and 1911. Pronounced gains at Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Bcranton, Unadlng, Blng- '
hamton, Kocbester and almost all other cities In the Middle Atlantic Btatea reflect the
stimulating effect of activity In the Iron and steel trade and nearly every Important
Industry, the total being considerably In excess of either last year or two years ago. 1
(enerally satisfactory conditions throughout the Houth Atlantic States are indicated
hy the ein In exchanges at llaltlmore, lllchroond, Norfolk, Columbia, Jacksonville and '
other cities, the total for the entire section being fi.3 pT cent In excess of the same j
week a year ago and 17.5 per cent, larger than In 1011. The returns from the cities
la tho Central South give evidence of well-matntalned activity In that portion of the
country, most centera, among them fit Louis, Louisville, Nashville, Chattanooga,
Rlrmlngbam, Galveston, Houston and Little. Hock, reporting good gains and the total
being well above efthcr previous year. Marked expansion at all the leading centers In
the Central States, exchanges at Chlrago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Detroit, Milwaukee,
Toledo, Grand Haplds and many oilier Important poiuts being larger than In any pre- 1
vlous corresponding period, testify eloquently to the notable activity that prevails In
all commercial and Industrial lines and the total shows a substantial lncreaaa com
pared with both years. In the Western States, Kaunas City, Minneapolis, Dulutn, j
Omaha, Wichita, De Molnea and other leading centera report marked Improvement, In
part aa a result of merchants anticipating requirements more freely than usual and
the general Increase lp mercantile activity following the favorable crop results of the
past season. Improvement In tbe lumber industry and well-maintained prosperity In
other leading linea Is Indicated by the Increased volume of bank exchangee at San
Francisco, Los Angeles, Hacraiaento, Seattle and most otber cities on tbe Pacific Coast,
and tbe total far the section la much in excess of both years.

In Chinese cafes Inst night, every pr
