Some corn was sold by the country

CHICAGO GRAIN AND PROVISIONS

CHICAGO. Feb. 1. Belief that the
southwest would escape from the damage
if thH cold wave tended to null down
wheat today. An easy tone prevailed at
the close, with quotations ranging irom

with the night before. Corn lost He to Uc

Except for a short time at the beginning
little disposition was shown to carry the
wheat market upwards on account of

position that tho fall-sown crop had been
well rooted and talk ot danger teemed

was the fact that primary arrivals
amounted to nearly double of those a year
ago, 896.0U0 busnels, against Ui.uuu ousneis.
There were also reports that New York
had been overloaded with flour.
Light deliveries of wheat by farmers
In tho northwest helped prevent any seri

felt the effect ot unloading, attributed to
one of tho big packers. The bulk of the
offerings, though, cams out only on hard
spots.

Packers Btarted out this morning bid

trumely opposed to granting uiiy such
concession na this, thinking that they
ought to get at least steady figures. Ah

In spite of the slowness ot tho trade
after tho ice had onco been broken there
was enough life to tho market to prac

weights were by far thu best sellers and
the heavier grades changed hands at
lower prices, Uulk of sales ranged from

ever, has been tho change In the demand
for the different welghm of Bluff. This
can be best oxplalned by saying that
the heavies and lights havo exchanged
places and where last week tho heavies
wero bringing tho top figures It Is now
the lighter and mixed grodea that are
commanding the premium.
