A little bull news sprung on wheat came to light on Saturday, when it wan hinted that the reserves In the sprint? wheat country are smaller than generally believed or credited. FALSE RUMOR CAUSES BUYING Report ot Snppoacd Decision of Mln lieaotn Tint? Cnsc by Supreme Court In PTor of Null roads la Mistake. -NEW YORK. Jan. 20. The demand for stocks was light today and moderate offerings were sufficient to depress prices of the' leaders nearly to the low point Of the present movement. Tho market was dull and larding dragged. The only llve'y period of tho session came In the early afternoon when for a few minutes there was excited trading on a rapidly rising scale of prices. Tho spurt was due to a report that tho supreme court had decided the Minnesota rato 1 caso favorably to the railroads When It wan discovered that this case was based on an error In the reading of a telegram and that it was an Incon spicuous case Instead of the long-awaited Minnesota case, which had been decided, prices fell off as suddenly as they had risen and soon reached the lowest level of tho day. On the upward movement I'nlon Pacific gained threo points and other shares one to two. At tho low pqlnt a number of tho leaders showed recessions of one to two points and Amalgamated nt 70s. was at n net low quotation for tho movement. The copper shares were once more depressed, being Influenced adversely by the sharp break of the metal In London and reports of sales here as low as lfi cents. Steel nlso was under pressuro and there was renewed weakness among spe cialties which have been heavy recently. American Tobacco moved over a wldo range, rising 7t to 2SS only to fall back eight points later. In the last part ot tho day there was unusual activity In Rock Island securities. Tha common and preferred stock and tho collateral 4s wero weak, tho bonds losing 2Y,. Reports from western railroad man agers Indicated that business momentum was unchecked and that traffic on the western lines was being moro than main tnlned. An additional engagement of $2,000.00 gold for Europe brought up tho total for tha movement up to $9,000,000. Bonds were heavy. Total sales, $l.
