TUK OMAHA SUNDAY BKE: .UNUABV 19, 1913. 5- GRAIN ADD PRODUCE MARKET Enormous Shortage of July Wheat in Chicago Cauiei a Little Arixiety. CORN BULLS ARE DISAPPOINTED Chan n Cah situation Amoag importer Tiring Illdii Out of Mn rlth nrrnlta that Ther llae Hoped For. OMAHA. January 1J, 1913. There li an enormous hortage la the July wheat future at Chicago. It la be lieved by well-posted men In tho trails that the longs in May wheat have Uktn the opposite end or July. In caae the May wheat 1 boosted to higher levela the July output la more than likely to sympathize, with a crop scare and the Mion In the May uneasy and Inclined to cover, there will be enough Investment buying of July to maek nil shorts uneasy una to change their Vosltlon In that par ticular future. Those who are now carry ins tho May In Chicago, and who have hi .luly told, have doubtless taken their position with the Intention of delivering wheat taken during May on July con tracts. The wheat market haa for some little time been tied up rather tightly and the controlling Interest Is the long! in the May future. Recent price changes, as well as recent changea In aentlmxnt, have been brought about by the forced swinging of the speculative pendulum, with tho May bulla at tho lever. vTh time is rapidly approaching when the crop promise will become more and more uncertain. According to accredited authorities the winter wheat plant is do ing welt In many localities. Messages wore received fiom scattering sections of the southwest saying that while the top growth of the plant is brown and It falls to piesent a lively appearance, the plant is well rooted and that It will be heard from later on with growing weather. Circumstances and conditions surrounding the wheat was both bullish and bearish yesterday. The export trade was again In evidence with reported tak ings in all positions of sixty-eight boat loads. Otherwise the cash markets wero dull, with only 45,000 bushels changing hands at Chicago. Cash wheat was un changed to Ho lower. The corn bulls were somewhat disap pointed because, of a change in the cash situation as exporters reported bids out of line and the offerings on the increase. Growers In the Interior were freer sellers of cash corn and with the car situation easier the movement to primary markets will doubtlEB bo much larger. Cash corn, Hlo lower. The leading cash and elevator concerns were on tho helling side of oats In a liberal manner, while the buying was by commission housas and shorts. Cash oats W9Ha lower. CHICAGO, Jan. 18.-A11 board of trad marketB were dull and featureless today the usual weekend situation. Prices de clined slightly. There was a report that one of the most Influential traders was buying wheat, and this was formally denied, but not until It oatwed a slight upward flurry, in general the pit followed any Important buying or' selling orders, and in the ab tenae of these did nothing at all. Pri mary receipt for th week were larger than a week ago, the grain coming from the southwest. Northwest receipts de creased a little. Weakness in corn was based on report that down state points were selling spot at concessions which could not be met here and to tho evaporation of the ex port demand. Cash corn declined tic. Im portant longs were best sellers, and while those who took It checked the decline, they found themselves well supplied when the session closed. The dullness in oata was profound, and the tone heavy In sympathy with corn. Provisions closed unchanged to Zo lower a steady but dull market. Packers bought moderately from local trader. The western hog run for the week was 493,300 head, as Against 641,000 the previous week, and 703,500 a year ago. The leading tutures cioseq as toiiows Article! Open. I Ulgh. Low I Close, VesV. The market on beef steers, owing to the liberal receipts at all market points, declined more or less everywhere and this market furnished no exception to the rulo. HOOS-It being the last day of tho week and there being a liberal run hura tor a Saturday trade In hog's was vo.'y satisfactory from a sellers' viewpoint. While shippers and speculators bought very moderately as compared with tnolr operations during tho last rew duya tho buyers representing tha packing lutervsts were on the market comparatively early, their very first bids being at steudy fig ures. The opening tradu was somuwimt uneven, as prices rungud anywhere from steady to strong, and In spots 11a much as a nickel higher as compared with yes terciay'a general market. A large portion of thu receipts changed hands quite early In the forenoon, but us the morning wore away trade, It anything, got worse In stead of better, the closing transaction being at the low point ot the day. A range of pricea around J7.207.M Included the bulk ot the sales and a top of 7.40 was paid for several loads ot prime of ferings. While the top price is tha same us yesterday the lower figure of the raliKO ot prices tor the majority of the transac tion is a little higher, thus making tho general trade mostly uteady to strong, It might be ttUdcu thut whatever Improve ment took place was largely on thu nice uutciiur grades and possibly on some of tho light orturiugs. Light hogs sold largely at 17.20 and down, while most of the heavy packers changed hands around i.254t.30, with l.Sful.tu taking unytmng on tne prim order. On the whoio tho movement wa brisk, a a very generous uupply wa dlsposud of at un tuny nour. The royal family of Russia have lately returned thank for the recovery of tna Tsarerltch from a serious Illness. Thera ha been a deal of unnecessary mystery about this Illness, but the fact has now boon mado publlo that the boy Is "hoemo- phlllc," or, In common medical slang, a "bleeder." Bo was the lato duke of Albany, cf whom It was said that ho had only two skins Instead of three. That wa all non sense. He and other loemophllas had or have Just as many klna a other people. Tho troublo Is with tho blood Itself. If you oc I cut a finger tho wound bleeds for a time, then a clot 1 formed nnd the flow stops of lUelf. In the caso of tho young heir to the Russian throno and other afflicted with this curious complaint, tho blood la of a different con sistency and haa not tho quality of clot tlng. Consequently even the amalloat cut i dangerous, for It may drain all th blood out of the body. Thero is one very strange point about this malady. It I handed down In tho female line, yet only occur In men. Tha second on of the king of Spain Is isald t be affected by it and so are several other lesser royalties. Rlua blood haa It penalties. Kveryotia will remember the caso of the lato duke of Portland, who Buffered from a strangj dlscusQ of a very rare nature, and who for this reason became an absolute re cluse. Royal famlHe Intermarry o largely that hardly any of them are free from certain complaint, fho cxar him self, although his general health I good, used to suffer from a mild form ot epl leptlo fits, and there Is consumption In tho family. It was consumption that killed the czar's brother, who, during all the latter year of his life lived In the com paratively warm climate of tho Caucasus The king of Spain, who wa a most deli cate baby, grew up strong and athletic owing to careful physical training. I4ut he has a troublesome malady ot the brnn chlal and nasal pasagq which forces him to undergo a alight operation about once a year. Many people imagine that the kaiser's withered left hand I due to some con genital disease, but tld I not the caa It wa due to an unfortunate accident at his birth. The result I that the arm I rotne four Inche shorter than tho other. Ills right hand, however, la prodigiously Iiowerful. It haa been said that tho acol dent wan duo to the late arrival ot tha doctor, the letter summoning him having been posted Instead of delivered by hand Tho only trace of trouble about the Kaiser dating from birth la a thickening of tho drum of one ear, which give him a cortuln amount of pain at time. There was great anxiety some years ago when hi throat went wrong, for It wa remem bered that both his father and mother died of that terrible disease, cancer. In the case of tha Emperor Frederick the disease attacked the throat. Tlx re t lunaoy in more than on royal family. In 1911 Ilavaria celebrated the silver Jubilee of her king, Otto I. Otto aseonded the throne In 18S6, and even then had bean hopelessly Insano for four teen years, He went off hi head at the ugo ot 29. Ills brother, Ludwlg II, friend nnJ patron of Wagner, was also mad, and ended hi own llfo by drowning liimsolt In the lako In front of the palace. The disease from which Otto suffora ia techni cally known a "paranollu." Poor Carloltu, sister of the late king of the Helghing, and oncu Empress of Mexico, la also hopelessly Insane, but In her aso tlir msdncra was caused by th ahotk pf her husband's death. Saveral members of tho house of Hups burg, whloh rules Austria, are subject ti fits of passion which are near nkln to Insanity. Tho unfortunate Rudolf, who killed himself at Meyerlln:, was subject to fits of this kind. Pearson's Weekly. THRILLS OF CANNON SHELLS Odd nml T7nd of I. tick Noted on th Flrlnir Line n (lie Rattle of Tripoli. Tho corresuondont of tha Oolosno Ca- ictte Tilth the Turks In Tripoli send- this account of queer piece of tuclcj "which sound Ilka airy tal, and yet' are sober truth. "In the first bombardment of tha Turk-' Ish camp by the big rum of the Italian nuvy a shell felt Into a Bedouin's tsnfi and there hurst. Luckily tho Inmate ot the tent wars mostly out In th open; the mnn waa fighting In the rank and tho women wore busy washing some twenty paces away. Rut tho only child, 11 pretty llttlo baby a few week old. wa aleeplng peacefully In It cradle, a round basket of plaited cane. "Anyono who known tho destination wrought by a large eholl will have no doubt a to the fate of the tent nnd IU small Inhabitant. The stuff composing? the tent waa mostly burnt, and tho rest; of It wa torn Into mlnulo fragment, and In company with the furniture, alto broken Into atoms was whirled far away and hcotteied over a large area. On th alto once occupied by the tent waa now to be een only a deep nolo, and round It a heap ot earth burnt black by tho explosion. Threo or four top.i from that hole lay tho overturned crmllo, and front beneath It came loud walling from tha Krdotiln's little girl, who wa quite aafa nnd sound. Swept out of the tent by tho rush of nlr she had been protected by tho bosket from tho flylnc splinter, "Tho shells soom to have a vein otV humor. They seldom live up to their gruesomo reputation, nnd often their only effect I to terrify people out off their wits. In the first days of the last bombardment an Arab family gathered! round tho cooking pot were amusing1 themselves with small wtttlclams over tho detonation. One of the shell fly ing around must havo heard their In sulting remarks, for It suddenly plunged, plump with a loud roar Into the mlddlo of the party, sent them flying head ovet" heels, hurled some handful of sand fn, their face and sent the cooking pot In a highly dismembered condition flylnK away on tho blast. When ti.o party col lected their sntifes they found tha stta of their pleasant dinner now occupied, by a black smudge, nnd so the mockers had that day at any rato to go dinner less and suffer the pans of hungor, un let tho excitement had robbed them ot their appetite. "Another time I waa silting ttndar a thorn bush, drlnklnc tea with a colleague, Huddcnly a shrapnel burst over our heads. My colleague sprang to his feet to sea If he oould nee where tt had come from. At the same moment the base ot the shell, soma six or seven pound In weight, nurle.d itself at the exact spot on which ho had been sitting and sent tho teapot flying at mr head, "A strnngn pleco of mingled good and bad luck fell to the lot of a Turkish, officer on the last day of tha cannon adej There had been a pause of several haunt In tho firing and tha officer hail seized tho opportunity to have a midday siesta, from which he waa rudely awak ened by tho flrt' hot of tha second ohapter of the bombardment The ahell plungod right Into hi tent, tore It li piece and scattered the frngmenta far and wldo. He told mo afterward that the fiery heat of the explosion gav him a feeling an If ht leg had been torn oft or burned. Some time elapsed be fore ho had sufficiently recovered him self to seo whether he could still move hi legs. "Tho experiment succeeded beyond hi wildest hopes, and then he crept me chanically out of tho ohaos ot debrl round him and stood up on hi feet. Then It dawned upon him that he had passed almost acathleas through the or deal. Tho only Injury wa to th drum of one ear, but ha will not lose hla hear ing. Two days after hla adventure ha showed me the trousers and ahlrt which he wa wearing at tha time. Tha trous ers were cut to shreda, and a black: a .coal; mot of tha hlrt waa burned. Of hla handkorolilef only a blackened fragment remained. His box wan smashed to stnlthereen". and the clothes In It reduced to tha condition of sieves and badly scorched. A pair of new boots were found fifty yard away with all tholr uppers gone. Near them lay all that had survived ot his stockings, tho worked monogram of their owner. The bravo man waa de lighted to find this relic, which he In tends to take home with him to hla wife. Rut ho nourish a bitter grudge against tha Italian for disturbing hla siesta ao discourteously, '"Bnver Uey himself at tha vary be ginning of hla time at tha scene ot hos tilities had another exporlenco of min gled good and bad luck. According ta the habit ho has ot scorning: caver ot any shape or kind, he stood upright, In the middle of the storm of shell, hi face tunted toward the enemy, and give hla .orders. After the lapse of soma time a nolae to his right made htm turn In that direction to see what was the matter. At that moment a splinter from a shell tore away the clasp of his award belt, cut his coat Into ribbons and slightly grazed his chin. Had It come a second earlier It would have burled It self In hi body. "A unique effect of the modern bullat It was my good fortune to e at To bruk. An Arab had been plercd br seven bullets and yet no vita! part wa Injured. I could clearly seo tha mark of tho entrance and exit of each bullet. In spite of It all the man now runs about aa hearty a a buck and a pleased as Punch." Not to II o Por;otten. They were reviewing tha past season's big base ball battles. "There Is one gamo that I can't forget." said the sandy little man. "It left an Ini- ? cession on me that time will never ef ace." "What game was that?" "It was between the Giants and th Pirate."
