The upturn In wheat yesterday was en
1 1 rely too rapid when conditions surround,
ing the market were carefully welched.
The strength shown In wheat Wednesday
was brought about by reports of n bull
ish character, and they were found later
to bo without foundation. The reported
taking of a round lot of durum wheat at
Uuluth was not only denied, hut the larg

wheat was dull, not only Tor the present,
but for future delivery. The big flour
sales reported on Wednesday-were also
denied by northwestern authorities, and
the result that receipts at the leading:

s!V.es. f wlllllt reported at Uuluth were
ited down to a single cargo yesterday,
and It was learned that this Wheat wan
located at Buffalo Instead of at the north
western market. These conditions helped
to change sentiment, which was bearish
at the close last night. Thoy also assisted
Hi the selling by longs, no well as the put
ting out of short lines on a liberal scale.
There were other helps on the bear side
or wheat, and they, too, were of a telling
character. The leading of these was pr jb

general falling off In the cash trade in

wheat, .together with a world of wheat
to arrive during the last few days,

the big northwestern markets. Cash

Com traders said after the close that
the leading longs had been selling during
the greater part of the day, which filled
buyers up and made them rather timid
about advising purchases except on a
further break, Tho failure of a break to

also had considerable Influence.

CHICAGO OKA IN ANdImIMVISIONS
Feature of the Trading nnd Closing
Prices on Hoard of Trade.
CHICAGO. Jan. 17 Local grain mar-
kots declined again today, while provi
sions gained slightly.
At Its best today wheat was nearly a
cent under yesterdays top nnd generally
ruled under previous close. i-rices
slumped heavily on moisture In tho winter
wheat country, indifference caoies, an
easy spot market and a private estimate
that Argentine will have IGO.OuO.OOO bushels
to export to Kurope. Exports from tnnt
country continue on a hugs scale. The
northwest froely offered to nrlvc here nt
the opening of navigation at Vic under
May.
Corn wa9 weak all day. save for an up
ward flurry In sympathy with tho abnr-
tlvo bulge In wheat. May declined HBHc
under yesterday on tho heavy receipts aiid
on a flat cash market. .To the welgnt oi
long corn previously dumped Into the pit
were added short sales, weakness in
southwestern markets, whero owners
were reported as attempting to unload,
also was a factor In the local weakness.
The decline In oats was due to the In
fluence of other grains nnd weakness of
the spot market. A recent leading bull
sold heavily.
Provisions again advanced on the light
run of hogs, gaining 2V4c to 7ic.

slight railing off. but were liberal com
pared with Ihe snmn time two weeks ago

good and thei was more or less depres
sion in the trade. It will bo remembered
that on most days during thn preceding
week the supnllca met with a very strong
demand and In consequence, prices scored
a nig advance, but of lato the iltmnnii
lias not been nearly so broad, resulting
In a somewhat slow and Indifferent mar
ket most of the time. The dullness dur
ing the last week Is attributed In tho
bad condition of the eastern trade In
dressed mutton, which effected lambs
more than any other class of sheep.
I'revauintr prices of minus aro nnv-

has been true during the current week
