November Joe: Wood sman Detective
Continued from Page 8 )
looked nt them, anil you have boots to
your feet any ay."
Ntevo's ejaculation can not be fet down
here.
"He kop' L'oinj; to the window." con
tinued Joe, "cos ho wanted to locate the
spot where ho reckoned he'd slip oil' tho
'ar. 1 told you ho know tho lino well.
Say, Steve, ain't thero any eurvo whoro
' tho engine slows down that you pass
I about one o'clock?"
"She slows down just boforo sho f;ets
( to tho bin trestle-bridgo over the Shim
panny Lake."
"I Bupposo 1 can get a quick engino
at Seven Springs and go back down tho
! lino?"
! "Sure," said Stove, "tho minuto I
givo your naino in I "
''TWENTY minutes later wo arrived at
A Seven Springs nud in less than
twenty minutes more, November Joo and
1, with a representative of tho Provin
cial Police, wero steaming back along
I the line. Our engine thundered over the
Shimpaiiny Lake and drew up. A call
from .loo brought us running to him.
I "Hero's where ho jumped," ho said.
, "See! ho lost his footing and rolled down
j the bank."
We followed tho trail without dilliculty
I for about fifty yards; then, we eamo upon
n sapling spruce freshly cut down, about
a loot above the ground.
Joe and the police trooper, whoso naino
was Polloks, examined the little treo witli
'Is ,inKKcll cuts very carefully.
Polloks swore. "He's done us hero! "
he cried. "He's walked along tho met
als, no ono can tell which way he's
gone. ' '
"Huh! ho won't get shut of us," said
November, "not that away. Whoro 's the
nearest post ollico on tho lino?"
"At Silent Water."
"You go and call up the engine, Pol
loks. It's Silent Water for us fast as
we can get there."
Polloks wasted no time, and once more
wo wero Hying along the line.
"The train passed Shimpaiiny trestle
at li.UO this morning," shouted the
trooper through the din of our traveling,
"nnd it's 7 now. Our man's go't near
four hours start if he's ahead of us; but
it's eighteen miles to Silent Water, so
we may just nip him on the permanent
way."
Hut with tho keenest look-out, we came
in sight of no figure ahead of us Ix'foro
we reached Silent Water. It is a very
small township, and wo slipped through
the depot so as to arouse no curiosity, and
only stopped tho engino a couple of hun
dred yards beyond to givo us time to
jump off. Wo hurried back to tho post
ofllce.
"Any fellow with his right arm in a
sling been posting a letter here?" in
i pi i roil Joo of tho postmaster.
"Nope."
.Too pulled Polloks aside. "Quick,
work tho telephono nnd have every post
otlico within twenty miles round watched.
If n man with his right arm in a sling
comes along to post a letter, arrest him.
Ho '11 bo wearing cowhide moccasins, Quo-bec-bought,
and a good size. . . . Hut
it wns hero I expected he'd aim for."
Polloks had hardly got to the tele
phone, when Joe swung round, and catch
ing him by tho shoulder, forced him down
behind tho counter out of sight. The next
moment, a tall young man with his arm
in n rough sling opened tho door of tho
post-oflice,
"Two cent stamp," ho said curtly to
the postmaster.
Tho stamp wns handed out, and as tho
stranger turned to go he held it between
his lips, plunging his left hand into his
pocket. T saw him pull out a long enve
lope. At that instant Joo and tho polico
trooper lenped upon him.
"What in " yelled tho man.
Hut November Joe had seized the letter.
"Hold your man, Polloks. T.ook, this
letter is addressed to tho fliant Oldfields
Head Ofiices. It is tho Tiger Lily report,
nnd that is tho murderer of Fletcher
Buckman."
"It wns suro ensy," said Joe, as we
traveled up the line again, "from the
moment I saw the mud stains on the car
lot in Huckman's car. They wero still
wet and when the murder was done we'd
boon going without a stop for three hours,
time for any boots to dry in those heated
cars. So it wasn't any ono on the train
that was clear? Then whoever dono
it must 'a' been young nnd active or he
could never board a train traveling nt
fifteen miles an hour, and he must have
lieen fairly educated or ho could it 't have
used the typewriter. Again he must have
been well acquainted with this railway."
"How could you tell that?" I asked.
"You remember that the blind was up
oil' ono window in Huckman's car. Again
nnd again the murderer went to that win
dow (I could tell by his tracks on the
carpet). Now, why did he do that unless
ho was looking for tho place whoro ho
meant to jump oil'? And how could ho
recognize that placo unless ho knew the
lino?"
I nodded.
"As for Knowlcs," said Joo, "why
you heard more'n one reason why he was
plumb out of it. The cigars "and tho
matches, and the wild-cat nails lio
carried."
"Hut how could you guess this fellow
had his arm in a sling?"
"You mind that cut sapling near
where he tumbled olf the cars? Ho
hadn't took away two foot of it. What
diil ho want a bit of spruce that length
for? It wouldn't bo to help him walk
or 1 'd 'a ' guessed a sprained ankle. . . .
1 fancied it might bo for a splint. Ho
wouldn't fall soft off tho cars, you
bet. . . "
"Hut you said it was his right arm?"
"Look at tho way he hacked tho
sprueol Tho way a man would clumsy
with his loft hand. That meant he'd
damaged his right."
"Hut how did you know ho'd waut to
post that letter and post it at Silent
Water? Why, it would have seemed more
likely he d make away across country."
npilH post-ollice at Silent Water was a
x dead sure thing. I 'II explain that; bu
ou must go back a bit. You see, that
chap onl) meant to get a forward look-in
at tho leport, his game and the game of
tho people he was working for was to'
forestall tho rest of the world in knowinir
what Huckman's decision was. He did
not want to kill Huckmaii, only matters
turned that way. Then, he had to take
away the report for it wasn't a cent o'
use to him until it was in the hands of
the (Hunt Oil Company, and he had to
get it there without any notion of its hav
ing been tampered with. His idea was
to go back along the lino and post it just
where Huckman might have posted it him
self. He trusted to the suicide dodge to
hold up suspicion till he was through with
that."
" Hut would tho Oiant Oil Company act
on tho report after hearing of Huckman's
horrible death?" 1 argued.
"Why not?" said Joe. "All they'd
think was ho'd had it posted the night
before, just as soon ns he'd finished writ
ing it. Yes, they'd 'a' acted on it and
this chap (1 havon't got his name yet)
would 'a' cleaned up a good many hun
dred thousand dollars!"
"Hy tho way, Joe," I said. "Where
is Huckman's report?"
Joo smiled. "On its wav to (iiant Oil
by this. We mailed it."
"I wonder if it was favorable?"
"Wo couldn't open that, you know;
but tho chap had a slip o' paper on him
on which he'd written a telegraph mes
sage. Just ono word 'Buy.' So I
guess you can buy me fifteen shares in
Tiger Lily as soon as you like, Mr.
Quaritch," replied November. "I've
got tho money; I trapped a silver fox
last winter, and this report 'II may be
turn it into a gold one! You light out
and buy some shares too, and then you
ought to have dollars enough to make
that t rip to Africa wo'vo so often yarned
about. I'd liko to shoot one of them
lions. I seen ono once to a Fair near
Levis, and you could hear him roaring
out on the ferry half way across to
Quebec. 1 'd sure liko to be a T. It. and
drop one of them. ' '
