The contest over the prlco of wheat on- the Board of Trade to day looked like n draw most of the day, but the bears were on top at the close, with prices V4o to Ho under yesterday. It took considerable unloading by longs with profits In sight, and much pressure from short sellers to check a further ad vance In corn.- Final prices were practi cally unchanged. Ooats were quiet and closed Irregular, while provisions de clined from 10o to 27V&C. Wheat started higher on on advance at IJverpool, which market reflected the higher market here yesterday,- a decrease in the European visible, and the political situation In the Balkans. A good demand for flour, considering the season, was an additional bullish factor. Thesa influences were short-lived. Longs, with profits In. sight, started realizing because of the' liberal snowfall arid moderate weather, and May dropped to 91Tic. Friends of the grain ran the prices back to 92?iJ?92V!C. On this rise, would-be sellers discovered that the demand had been pretty well satisfied and the price sagged to the lowest of the day. The aggressive corn buyers who sent prides up yesterday continued their tac tics today and stampeded a, considerable short Interest who bid the price of May up to to 60',ic The advance was well held for tome time, but toward tho close longs, who- thought It time to secure profits, found that demand had been satisfied on the way up, and prices slumped. At the bottom there was renewed support and the close was steady. Oats fluctuated narrowly In sympathy with corn, and closed with little change from yesterday. Trade was light. Six thousand tierces of lard delivered on January contracts yesterday were placed on talc In the provisions pit at the opening, resulting in it sharp decline all along tho line. Ooenlng prices for Janu ary lard were 17&c. Part of It went to carriers at 30c discount under May. January pork closed with a net loss of "-Wc. and January rlbr Were 15o lower. Bank clearings were In well mantained volume throughout the year at Hi a principal dties In the Middle Atlantic Statu, at shewn by gains of 7.8 per cent over both preceding years, in tbe total for that sectlen. PMladtlpbta, Pitts burgh, Bcraatam, Beading, Buffalo, Rochester, Wheeling and numerous other points report Increase, reflecting the generally prosperous conditions and especially tbe stimu lating effect ef the unprecedented activity in Iron, steel and coat That generally favorable oadIUon prevailed throughout tbe year In the Booth Atlantic States Is Indi cated by tse marked expansion In exchanges at most of tbe leading dttee, among them Baltimore, Richmond, Norfolk, Charleston, Macon, Columbus, Oa., and Jacksonville. Tbe lateness of the cotton crop, adverse weather and floods In some districts had a retarding effect on bank clearings in the Central Bouth, and there is some irregularity In tbe returns notably those for June and September but notwithstanding this, all tbe leading cities report more or less gain for the entire year and tbe total is con siderably larger than ever before, rii iafactory agricultural conditions, with a result ing expansion in general business, had a remarkably stimulating effect on the volume of bank clearings In tbe Central States, eipedally towards the end of the year, and practically all dtlea report good gains over both years, prominent among them being Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Detroit, Milwaukee, Toledo, Yonngstown, Canton, Orand Baplds and Kalamaieoo. Although, tbe returns from tbe ritlas In tbe Western States were fairly satisfactory daring the first bait of tho year, tbe depressing effect of con siderable crop uncertainty was reflected in contracted exchanges at a number of points, but wben it became certain that large baryta U would be gatbered there was a general expansion in business and bank clearings Increased until at many centers they reached tbe highest point ever touched. There were good gains at Minneapolis, St. Paul, Dolutb, Sioux City, Kansas City, Cedar Rapids, Omaha, at Joseph and Denver, and the total was much In excess of dther 1911 or 1010. Generally favorable returns are made by tbe dtlea on tbe Pacific Slope, owing mainly to prosperous agricultural conditions, which favorably affected all departments of business, though7 In soma district! the remarkable Improvement In tbe lumber Industry was also of great benefit. Ban Frandsco, Los Angeles, Seattle and Portland are among tbe dtlea where consider able expansion appears aad tbe total for tbe year shows good gains. TXAE. K.XngUat Middle. ... aT.AUaatU.
