CORN PRICES ARE STEADY Kvcn In Fare of Fnlrly llrnvy Hf eeli.ln It Mnlntnlnn Itn Orrn Cur ShnrtnKr May He Fnetor In Price. ; m 1 OMAHA. Jan. 6. 19H Comparatively little chaiigo ot lmixirt-aiico-was noted In the wheat market dur ing the past week Before tho holidays the market was extremely dull. T110 I'ecembt-r option went out quietiv nt S4'4r. miderately strong ut the last. The May and Juno worked fractionally higher on short covering. The September delivery was actlvo Bnd nt times lrre(U. lar. Toward the end of the week tho market was firmer as a result of more Sulllsh foreign news, nnd a better de mand for caeh wheat. Spring wheat re ceipts wore less, but promise to Increase with a better car situation. Another helpful Influence, perhaps the most Im portant of all, Is tho situation in the southwest, whore the continued douth la beginning to oauso decided apprehen sion concerning the winter wheat. The Argentina situation Is not much changed. Shipments this week show a small gain over those of a week ago. The new wheat In South America is just beginning to arrive at the terminals, and It will bo two or three weeks yet before the exports of this year's crop make .un substantial Increase In shipments. So far as the American movement of spring wheat la concerned it 1b generally admit ted to be surprisingly largo for thU sea son, but the distributive movement is equally larsre and stocks In stomgo are not burdensome. The demand for whent from millers la more than ordinarily ac tive, for tho season. One of the best judges of cash markets stated that with any considerable break In prices from the present level a good export would result. Cash wheat unchanged to -o higher. Corn was dull throughout tho whole of last woe.k. with nrlcea fairly stead', even In the face of fairly heavy receipts whleh have been limited to the capacity of re ceivers to handle them. This car shortiigo Is gottlng to be a serious question atul evontuallv mav nrove uulte a factor in Drico maklnc. tho onlv variation belnir early in tho week, when confirmation ot large export sales of the preceding weolc started a decided covering movement among the Drofeaslon.il traders. The tic tual demand for real corn Ih the chief element of strength In tho face ot bcariHh sentiment which appears to be greatly in tno majority among the traders, jix port sales are moderate and considering the abundant suddIv at hand fall to nave any lasting Influence on quotations. CHICAGO, Jan. 6. The persistent villi- lty of an advance of com prices In tho face of heavy sales by combative bears lent Interest to the session on the Board of Trade today. The most pertinent In formation of the day, was tnat muou coarse cereal went to a Dig casn anu elevator house. IWIheat advanced deupito news of a generally bearish nature. Oats and provisions scored moderate net galna. The elevator concern which led the van for the bull contingent In corn took May options in huge lot, much of It from bear leaders who attempted to check tho advance. Tile newH wua rather bullish. as viewed by tho trade at large. Prices In southwestern morKets were mgner ana tho cold weather wa taken to mean heavier feeding of cattle and hogs. That many fanners are already doing this ap parently was indicated by the weight ot hogs received last week, an they weighed in average of nine pounds more than tho previous week. Thero was a fair export business and the vislblo increase tiee.OUO bushels was less Uion tho bears had ex pected. wimnt wu strengthened bv the appear ance of Home outsldo Investment orders and the adjournment of tho peace con ference without reaching a settlement. The snow In Kansas was bearish news, but It was offset by the zero weather which accompanied. It. The tnoreaso in tho world's visible supply was not posted until near tho close too late to Influence tho market materially. Cables wero higher, despite perfect weather In Argen tina. Oats advanced In sympathy with corn, elevatorw buying moderately and shorts covering. Provisions closed moderately firm, about midway of the day's fluctuations. Sales by packers sent the price back from tho top. The hog run weat was heavy. I Futures ranged as fgllowa: Artlclel Open. Hlgh.j I.ow. Close.! Hat'y. ((uotntlons of the Day nn Varlona Commodities. Though receipts were fairly lib eral, there seemed to bo a good outlet for the biilk or the offerings, especially for prime stuff of handy weight. While lambs made up about the usual propor tion of tho supply there- were practically none on tho choice order, but what weto on sole brought prices fully steady with the close of last week. A bunch of fed western lambs changed hands at $$.35, tlio highest point reached during the day. and Identical with the highest prlco paid last Friday. In the nred sheen ri!vi! ewes comprised the big end of the hold ings, there being a few yearlings but no wethers to speak of. A bunch of prime ewee sold up to $4.75. In general ewen sold anywhere from steady to a dlmn higher, thero being apparently a better demand for that dims of sheep than for several days back. As already mentioned, yearlings were In such light supply that It would bo hard to make comparisons. Taking tho general market Into considers, tlon business was brisk, wltli a good, healthy undertone to prices. The total receipts were quite liberal for a Monday, amounting to about slxty rour ears or 14.000 jiead.
