The volume of busl nss m wheat has been small for some Utnn past and it has been confined al most exclusively to the ranks of profei slonals or room traders. i'i2-ca.Uon8 aro tlmt 11 w"' take some thing of an unusual character to stir up the world into wheat speculation again. Tho public has made up Its mind that the wheat market at Chicago la controlled larfely. by a "maii clrc,e Of rich men and they are enabled to put the price, up pr down at will. In case of a runaway bull market the Chicago crowd of big holders would be thrown aside ahout like so much chaff, but In the meantime they would be disposing: of their holdings at handsome profits. The possibilities In wheat are great although the situation statistically Is bearish at the present. In tho event of a crop scare In the spring, which Is not at all unlikely, there would be a scramble of shorts to cover, Any thing like that would act like wildfire on the speculative community, not only In wheat, but In other commodities. Dec. 36. Drj' weAther In the southwest was Influential In advancing the wheat' market today, particularly the July delivery, which closed W3o over Tuesday. May gained UtTTio net. Corn closed a shade higher to HSUc depressed. Provisions gained slightly In price. Farmers of the southwest, through brokers, declared that their wheat fields are bare of covering, and that unless there Is a blanket ot snow soon January bids fair to develop damage to thq Kcrm lnatlnr( crop. Tho effect of this news was felt mostly by the July option, which was purchased lllwrally, as waa tho May, May was sold rather frecl) pre sumably against cargoes of Duluth wheat bought for shipment In the' spring for Chicago or Huffulo. and against Minne apolis and South Dakota salca of cash wheat to arrive by rail, matter saies were on a basis ot liSc below tho price ot May In this market. Kxcept Paris, foreign markets were closed, but a well known English authority cabled the statement that North America IioUIb tho key to the shipping1 situation. The trade mostly Ignored such bearish news as the heavy primary receipts and the final government report showing that Kansas raised 92,000.000 bushels of wheat this year, as against 51,000.000 bushels In 1911. Julv sold between SSHc and 89liXHo, closing 14SIHO advance, at 89c. May ranged between 9t4c and Kift92lc, clos Intf USio up at 914c. With favorable weather and the move ment of the crop to market limited only bv the cars available, corn ruled easy. May selling between 4So and 4Slfr8Sc. and clos Ing lc down at 4Sl4c. Trade In oats was uneventful, except for small sales by December longs to cash houses. The tone was barely Bteady. FLURRY IN MONEY NO SURPRISE Smallest Dor's Business Mnce- .loir, Nlnetecn-KlrTPt,, Seen Tolnl of llniulrril Tlionsaud Shares Sold. NMW YORK, Ilea 2.-There were no signs today ot an awakening- of the stock market from the lethargy Into which It has fallen lately, Trading was even duller today than during Tuesday's listless ses sion. It was the smallest day's business since July, 1911, with a total of 101.OM shares. Holiday conditions still obtained and, with foreign exchanges closed and money rates soaring, there was little In centive to do buslnos. While variation were unusually small, a firm undertone prevailed despite the flurry In money, which sent up the rate for call funds to 12 per cent. Prices eased off fractionally when In terest charges were otlmblng, but later recovered. Trading1 In the local trabttou issues wan again unusually active and some further gains wero made. A few ot the specialties moved widely. Included In this list were Pullman and Sears-Koe-buck, which wero rtronr, and Rubber, which sold down morn than 3 points. Iackawanna was unusually active, but Its prpe was little affected by the an nouncement of the terms of subscription to tho new stock Issue. Standard Oil Is sues were active and strong on the curb. Standard Oil of New Yortc advanced to 690, a rise of 10G points In less than a week. Other oil shares rose 36 to W points. The tightening of money rates was not unexpected and Its effect was minimized by the dullness of tho stool; market, tho demand being so light that the rate eased off before the close, Vnonrtalnty of the money rates during tho closing days ot the year will contlnun to act as a drag on speculation. The November 1 return from transcon tlnental roads catno In today and In each case substantial gains In. both grows and net earnings were shown. Union Pacific, Southern Pacific, Atolilson and North western all reported gains, while from tho south a good return was made by the Southern. The bond market was quiet and Irregu. lar.
