A demand from abroad Is necessitry In
order to keep the prico of wheat from
breaking irlto low levels. When Uio mar

rather bearish, but the bears lacked a
leader and only a moderate price loss
for the day waa seen. On all the hard
spots of last week the May future came
out lit lots to suit and the selling was
generally accomplished through one set
of broknni, showing beyond a doubt that
big holders In the trade were anxious to
dispose of at least u part of their line.
The longs left no stone untumtd In their
search for material to better their con
dition. They have told of flour sales that
vers never msde and thoy have also told
of a reduction In the surplus of Argen

out of whole cloth. A drowning man will

CHICAGO G R A'lTV A7TD PROVISIONS
Features of the' Trading' aud Closing;
Prices on Board of Trade,
CHICAGO. Dec 23. A decrease In the
domestic visible supply advanced wheat
prices U6T4c today. Corn closed WaSlc
to o up, and oats, a shade to Uo down.
Provisions gained from 2ttc to 12ttc,
At tho outset lower cables, based on
heavy American shipments, gave the
wheat market an easy tone, particularly
as a liberal increase In the domestic vis
ible supply was expected. Trade for a
time was of a scalping character. With
the report that the visible supply had de
creased 84,000 bushels the covering orders
of shorts were reinforced by purchases
from other quarters, particularly tho
southwest. The demand from the latter
source was said to be Influenced also by
a good milling demand. May sold be
tween 90S2c, closing lio up, at Ol'ifctV-'e.
Spot wheat was In fair demand.
In, the corn market the first hours of
trading developed an easy tone on the
flno weather, but the bulge In wheat
prices advanced and closed nt the top,
Cash Iota generally wero a little lower.
Car shortage lit Illinois and Iowa Is re
stricting the movement. May ranged be
tween 48'Ui4Sic and 49c, closing 'WJ'.ic
higher, at 19c.
Although there was a fair demand for
oats for future deliver' and despite the
strength of corn and wheat, oats closed
with a Blight net loss on the day's trans
actions. A drop of ttc In the spot mar
ket seems to have Influenced consider
able local selling of futures. May sold
between 3$ttQ3Uc, closing a shade down,
at 33U6S3UC.
The local run of hogs fell 10,000 below
expectations and the consequent advance
at the yards caused higher prices In the
provision Pit. May pork closed i-',ic

SHEEP AND LAMRS While the trade

much better than Ihe close of last week
The Rpneral trado on both fat aheep and
lambs might be described as steady to
stronsT With a very Rood undertone to
values. A somewhat bearish factor In
the tratto was the fact that tho packer
nro not going to kill on Christmas diiv
consequently they did not care to have
any morn stock on their hands than what
wns needed for today and tomorrow
About 300 head of well finished fed west
ern lambs sold as high as 17.90. A couple
or loads or snorn lamos orougnt n.a.
Kor th s time of the year a very fair
trado wan donn III feeders, there being: In
tho neighborhood of twenty cam of rans
lambs and sheep on sale. On account of
thn fins weather and splendid range con
ditions that have prevailed In the north
western states an ran, soma or. tne sneep
men are shinning out stock later In thn
season than usual. Tho milk of the west- ,
ern shipments was sold for feeding pur-.

Tho total receipts were rainy large for
Monday, as around forty-four earn or
