TITE BEE: OMATTA, SATURDAY, DECEMBER 21. 1912 NAMING THE NEW HOTEL! Titles Suggested by Readers of The Bee for Hostelry. HONOR RESPECTED CITIZENS the Boy "W rltrrs Propone to Ilrnirtiihrr Men Who llne llnl Much 1'rom Inrnof In thr Affnlrs.nt of the Clt-. Buy him a certificate redeemable Jor a pair of our famoua 20 iFor ! Among the names suggested for the proposed new hotel, the best, It seems to mf arc "Thw Overland" and "The llran 1. If The former In honor of the (treat transcontinental rallroarl, which hen been the greatest faotor In the development of Omaha and the went; and the latten be .are of the splendid nchlevement In helping to build Omaha. If the name of an Individual be chosen, let tt be Bran ded, or CrclEhlon. We owe a great deal to both of these distinguished name). john nusir. 1 notice that the people of Omaha, through suggestion to the press, are se- U 'ting a name for the nen hotel, and I want to offer as a suggestion the name of Kontanclle. Omaha Is named after the mot Important of the Nrbrni-ka In dian tribes. The most Important name, as to any one connected with that tribe, or as to a family, and as known to the whites. Is the Fontanelle family. There fore It would properly relate, ns a name, to a hotel, or a park, or anything publlo in Its nature, conhoctnd with Omaha; and la also of a dignified and pleasant sound. W. a. 8RAI18. Among the names mentioned for the new hotel the writer has been attracted b.V "The Douglas." Nebraska was born under the squatter sovereignty Idea of Senator Stephen A. Douglas. As one of the claim olubi ex pressed It: "Wk believe In squatter sov ereigntythat the peoplo have the right to makb their own laws." This Idea seems to be growing In favor ngaln In this progressive" age. The early beat hotel was the "Douglas House," at which the writer and tho late Klrnrd rtosewater once boarded together when young mn. H was situated, how ever, on Harney street, not Douglas. Nothing would scarcely bo more appro priate than this title for a hotel located on a street aild In a county of the name name. ' If, however, another name la sought for" 1 would . suggest 'the name of a, heroic Indian chlof, who waa born near Omaha npd lived his llfo In this Immediate vicin ity Bellevue was the first permanent trading post established In what Is now Nebraska. Manuel Lisa, the Spaniard representing .the MLaourl Fur company, established a post called Fort Lisa be tween Omaha and Fort Calhoun, Near this "was a post' established for the Amer lean Fur compuny. These two were united and brought to BetJeVue by Luoten Fontanelle, a Frenchman, and Ills part ner. This Fontanelle was tho fattier of the half-breoil Lognn Fontanelle who be came tho lulnd chief of the Omaha In dians, and' tin such signed the -treaty of 1S34 by whlcfi these Indiana ceded to the united Statcn their possessions extending north froiji fho Platte river. X.ogan Fontanelle waa Hilled In battle with the Sioux in IKS, and his body waa brought to Boliovuo and burled beside his father. It Is needless to aay that tho U I nab as were alwoya friendly to the whites and the Sioux always hostile, and eVcry battlo fought by the Omahaa was In the Interest of civilization. Ixigan wm born nt old Fort Atklns6n, not far from the present alto of Omaha. Ilia father, Luclen Fontanelle, was a do Pendent of tho French nobility-and con nected with a royal family, Of Lofan Fontanelle It M sold: 'Ills control over the tribe was abso lute, and he waa respected and honored by all the whites. He made it a study to promote tho welfare of his people and to bring them out of their wretohcdne-is, poverty and Ignorance. ma effort to stop whisky drinking was successful. It waa hla Intention, as soon as tho Oma haa were settled In their new homo to nsk the government to establish ample schools among them to educate the chil dren of the tribe by force If they would not send their cMldren by reasonable per suasion. His calculations for. the benefit of the tribe were nfany, but like many other human calculations his life sud denly ended In the prime and Just as he was ready to benefit his people and sacri fice & llfejs labor for hlp!M humanity." Here waa a man worthy of the honor Why not call the hotel "The Fontanelle." OLD 8KTTLEK, One visiting .Salt Lake City Is Im pressed with the name given their fine new hotel, "The Utah." I want to sug gest a name for Omaha's new hotel a name no one can object to; one which stands far prosperity, education, culture, health and all that la best; one wo love "The Nebraska." J. H. FRANKLIN. 1 beg to submit the following name fpr tho new Jl.000.000 hotel, "Omabrandken." This w6rd may be written with Capital letters dividing the syllables or aa one word as follows: "Oma-HrandlCen," or Omabrandkcn." This name Include a portion of the city's name and the two principal donors of tho property on which this magnlflcont hotel Is to.be located. FLOn.ENCK"060DLA"ND, SH5 South Thlrty-fourth Street. We. the . bell boya of the Loyal holul suggest as Mho name of the new hotel, Hotel de Million," or "Hotel de Floss." P. SULLIVAN. M. KOUFFMAN, Bell Boys, Zitnik Damage Case is in Federal Court The case of Barbara Zitnik agaiiut the illilon Pacific Railroad company, wherein ffio formejr is suing for damages In the sum of K0.080 for the killing of hor hu. (land, John Zitnik, has been removed to the federal court on the grounds of di verse citizenship. The case came up In. the district court of Douglas county with John J. Mullen mentioned as Joint .de fendant with the Union Pacific Mullen waa the engineer In charge of the engtne when it ran down and killed Zitnik. Recently the attorneys for the plaintiff, for reasons of their own, with drew the name of Mullen from the title if the case and left only the Union Pa VlUc Jtailroad compapy as defendant. Tho railroad attorneys at once teolc the op portunity to take the case into the fed eral court on the ground of adverse elt ixetttblp. Mullen being a resident of Ne braska, adverse dtlzeashlp could not b claimed in the case as long as he was made a party to the complaint. i sV Boys MM Right before the Holidays, more than at any other time in the whole year, you feel the need of Clothes that will put you on a par with the best dressed men in town.
