proposed new hotel, the bft, It nis to
mr nro "Tha Overland" and "The Hran
di'lr. The former In honor of. the great
transcontinental rallroail, which has been
the greatest factor In the development of
Omaha and the west; ami the latten be-
.iifp of the splendid achievement In
helping" to build Omaha. If the name of
an individual be chosen, let tt be Bran
ded, or Crclghton. We owe a great deal
to both of thene distinguished name.

of Kontnitelle. Omaha Is named after
the mo Important of the Nebraska In
dian tribes, Tho most Important name,
as o any one connected with that tribe,
or as to a family, and as known to the
w'lltes, Is the Fontanelle family. There
fiTo It would properly relate, ns a name,
to a hotel, or a park, or anything publlo
in Its nature, conliected with Omaha! and
Is n1o of a dignified and pleasant sound,

Nebraska was born Under the squatter
sovereignty Idea of Senator Stephen A.
Douglas. As one of tho claim clubs ex
pressed It: "Vb believe In squatter sov
ereignty that the people have the right
tn makb their own laws." This Idea seems
to be growing In favor again In this
progressive" age.
The early best hotel was the "Douglas
House." at which the writer and tho late
Krijrard Itosewater once boarded together
when young msn. It was situated, how
ever, on Harney street, not Douglas.
Nothing would scarcely bo more appro
priate than this title for a hotel located
on a street and In. a- county of the same
nsrne.

Indian chief, who was born near Omaha
and lived his life In this Immediate vicin
ity Bellevue was the first permanent
trading post established In what ll now
Nebraska. Manuel IJsa. the Spaniard
representing .the Missouri Fur company,
established a ppst called Fort Msa be
tween Omaha and Port Calhoun. Near
this was a poet' established for the Amer
ican Fur company. These two were
united and brought to Detieyue by Wolen
Fontanelle, a Frenchmaii.and his part
ner. This Fontanelle was the father of
the holf-breod Logan Fontanelle, who be
came the h)ad chief of the Omaha In
dians, and as such signed the treaty of
1554 by whlcfi these Indians ceded to the
Tnlted State their possessions extending
north from he Platte river.
Logan Fontanolle was killed In battle
with the Sioux In 1K5, and his body wan
brought to Bellevue and burled beside his
father. It Is needless to say that the
Omaha were always friendly to the
whites and the Sioux always hostile, and
every battlo fought by the Omahas was
In the Interest of civilisation.

The case of Barbara Zitnik against tbs
Union Pacific Railroad company, wherein

John J. Mullen mentioned as Joint ,d

Zitnik. Recently the attorneys for the
