ILL FEELING OVER AN ARREST I'rnlmtlnn Officer linn Connell llnteil Into Court for rrrmlMtnjr 111 Son in Drlre llrnlfh Dr partmrnt Anln, Ilfftlfh Commissioner n. W. Connell Ib wc.irlnB two tinted optics and a badly deranged nor as the result of n flJt f Rht with Probation Officer Mogy Hern stria nt Eleventh and Dougta? streets liortly after 9 o'clock yesterday morning. The battle woji the result of 111 feellpg engendered by Hernsteln's filtng a. com. j)1nlnt agfllnnt Dr. Connell for allowing Ills son to operate an automobile In the 1 ity contrary to the city ordinance. Con nell's eon la 14 years of ago. The cajo tgalnirl Connell was dismissed by Acting Police Judge AltMadt. In his testimony Connell told Judge Alt Madt that his son was an expert with automobiles and nt the time In question the boy was "trying out" the machine, He said he had never been notified that his son had been driving the machine. Bernstein, however, said he mailed a letter to Connell personally, warning him nuainst allowing his son to drive the car Connell swore he never received the letter. Following the trial both men went Into the clerk's office, where they had a heated anrument. The argument lasted lown the stairs and out Into tho street Bernstein said when the' got to Kiev enth and Dougla streets the letter was referred to and h asserts Connell cursed him and then sent a right hook to Mogy's Jaw. Mogy lost his balance and fell to the street. Tie, however. Jumped up and frreised the battle. Michael Shapiro, a grocer, who was passing at the time and who saw the tlaht, said Connell struck the first blow. Jam mi Alnwcow, manager of the Bvans. Model laundry' was an eye-witness to the battle, and says the decision goes to Bernstein. According to his story he did not see tho first blow struck, but he did lee Bernstein strike Connell In the face nd knock him down. Bernstein then Straddled Connell, who was lying on his back In the filth of the gutter, and pro ceeded to, beat a tattoo on the commis sioner's face. A postman and two em ployes of the laundry company pulled Bernstein off, who, wishing to give Con tell full measure, sent Connell sprawling kgaln with a swing of hl heavy boot. Water Board Fails to Pay Its Share of Election Expenses The city commissioners have Instructed Comptroller McDonald to demand nn ex planation from the Water board of Its action In refusing to pay a part of the election expenses. Tho board was as sessed tl.15 for each clerk and Judge, which tho city paid. The board has to date refused to consider the payment. The Board of Education paid $2.60 to each clerk and Judge. Unless tho Water board pays this $1,25 Iho city will refuse to count tho Water board ballots at future elections. City Comptroller McDonald said he hart taken tho matter up orally with the board and the members had postponed action. He will secure a written refusal or ask the board to ndopt a resolution authorising the payment of the money. It Is believed that lit least 100 of tho WO clerks and Judges of election liavo as signed their election pay to loan sharks. The majority of assignments were mada on a basis of Jo, the usual pay of election officials. However, the county commis sioners' action In allowing a substantial Increase may result In theso officials so luring $10.60 each for the.lr work. If this proves true many of the election ifflclals will loso extra money, having as ilgnnd their pay without reference to the amount. Mrs, Tilden Chosen Presidents W.C, A.
