IDAHO PROTECTS THE IBEX
Idaho enjoys the proud distinction Per
hapa of being the only state In the union
that has found It neceury to enact a
law protecting Ibex. Not that there is
or ever was one of these animals In the
state, but some time back In the past a
legislator opined there was and got his
opinions enacted Into law Ilach suc
ceeding legislature has preserved the
tradition and solemnly re-enacted the
law. So it stands today, a monument
to the game preservative real 'of the
state. The hunter Is solemnly warned,
under severe pains and penalties, that
should he encounter an Ibex making a
meal off the cobblestones of some lofty
mountuln peak he Is to stay his lethal
arm and permit the animal to go frisk
ing away unscathed. The fact that no
animal of the genus capra Is native to
the New World seems never to have
found lodgment in the brains of our law
makers, to them the Ibex Is an actual
fact
It required several years of diligent
srarah to trace tho origin for the belief
that ibex frequented our state. Uka
many similar mistakes in natural his
tory, the matter had its origin In Ignor
ance of what constitutes a species, or
rather a genus of a species.
About twenty-five years ago some
hunters brought into the city of Holse
from somewhere In the Salmon river
mountulns the skin of a gont which dif
fered materially from the ordinary
Rocky mountain white goat (oreammis
montanus). At least people who saw
the skin said It differed, and after due
debate It was decided that the animal
must be an Ibex. The animal was white,
somewhat taller and more slender In
form than the ordinary goat, the horns
wcro much longer, having both a back
ward and lateral curve, the points fiat
tened instead of sharp, and It did not
possess the hump of the mountain goat
Thess were the principal distinctive
marks, and upon these a classification
wus made.
Other hunters reported similar gouts In
various parts of tho state, generally from
tho tygher ranges. These kept together
n small bands, and were exceedingly
-vary, As the years went on these Iboi:
(T) became scarcer, until, like tho buf
falo, only a few remained. Then cams
the wise legislator and Insisted that the
law's restraining hand should be laid
upon people bent on destroying our Ibex
herd. Outing Magaxine.
