In tho fusillade which followed the en trance of the detectives, Vogel and the woman were killed instantly. Accounts vary as to whether he shot ids com panion nnd then committed suicide, or whether they fell before the fire from tho officers. Of the wounded, hope was expressed for therecovery of two: Lulgl Ucaardl, a prt vatb detective, and William Uutler, a waiter. For the other two, both shot In the abdomen, there was llttlo hope. They are Martin S. Fay, a city detective, and Louis Mondaschelm, proprietor of the hotel where the battle occurred. Allen died shortly before 9 o'clock this morning. After deliberat ing all night, tho Jury which hag been trying Christian Steuer, a 73-year-old former, for killing his wife, Mary, last June, returned a verdlco ot first degree murder with n recommendation ot mercy.
