were bearish In their views on wheat.
What decline has been rstabllshed has
neither checked the movement or ln
crased the shipping demand, and prices
are far from being at a lovel to Invite

a factor and Is coming on very fast un
der favorable conditions. After a long
period of activity tho flour trade Is a
little sluggish at this time. The trade is

thorities on the corn yields over the big

eliminated as a market factor. Brokers
claim there Is a big concentrated' holding

piace. The big crop precludes any largo
volume of speculative buying and traders
expect prices to gradually sag to a lowel

and Irregularity marked tho course of
operations on tho stock exchango today.
For the greater port of the session trndlnf,
was almost at a satmlstlll. Some stookr,
notably St. Paul and the Hill Issues, were
moderately strong at tho outset, while
most other leaders, railways and Indus
trials, were heavy when not absolutely
weak. Certain of tho specialties, such
as American Beet Sugar, American Sugar
and American Woolen, whose affairs are
largely dependent upon tho tariff, rec
orded severe losses, which wcro partly
regained before the close.' American can
and tho Tobacco rroup. as wll as some
of the minor stocks, reflected varying do-
grees or pressure.
In the tlntO hour, when call money,
which had opened at 7 per cent, fell to 6
and Inter 34 per cent, tho entire list
moved forward until most losses were
moro than recovered. Lehigh Valley.
St. Paul. Union Pacific nnd Steel led the
rise, while Great Northern and Northern
Pacific added to Oarly gains, and Amalga
mated, which hod been among the heav

HOQB Speculators set the paco this
morning and It was a lively ono. The
market opened earlier titan usual and by
d o'clock It was practically over with
so far as hogs In first hands were con
cerned. (Speculators bought pretty much
everything at prices that wore 64rl0c,
most 10c, higher. A large proportion of
all tho hogs sold at 17.807.85, as against
87.70(07.80 on Saturday. The top waa
17.90, as against S7.&5 at the close of last
week.
While receipts everywhere were small
and conditions favorable for an advance.
It was very evident that packers were not
disposed to boost the market any morn
than was absolutely necessary, hence they
held back, In most cases allowing the
speculators to buy tho hogs at the ad
vance noted.
This Is the fourth day In succession that
hogs have shown an advance. Tho low
point last week was touched on Wednes
day, when hogs on this market sold on
an avetage of 17,66, so that after allow
ing for Improvement In the market to
day prices are around 2630o higher than
last week's low day.

Kills Highwayman
CHICAGO, Nov 4.-nuthorford It.
Cooke, assistant secretary of tho Chi
cago National league baso ball club, shot
nnd killed ono of two men who stopped
him on Washington boulevard early this
morning. Cooke said that two men In n
motor car drove up to tho sidewalk
nhead of him and one leaped out nnd
ordered him to throw up his hands. The
baso ball man drow a revolver from his
overcoat pocket and shot the man dead.
The other man, according to Cooke.s
ncount, had not left the automobile and
he threw In the clutch and sped away.
Police found In the dead man's pocknt

Cooko satd the man ho shot pointed a

father, her brother and hit- sweetheart,
today gave, up fifty mare square Inches
of akin for the burned body of Miss Ethel
Smith, for whom Billy Hugh, the crippled
newsboy, gave his life by allowing a use
