HOGS Slow and dull trade featured the
market on hog this morning with prices
ruling anywhere from steady to M(10c
lower than yesterday's level, in other
words bulk of the sales were regarded as
on a ,5c lower basis than yesterday's gen
eral market, majority of the holdings
being let go at figures around $8.704? H.73.
Several loads of the best offerings sold at
the top price. $8 SO, which Is just 24o
below yesterday's high mark. Speculators
bought a few hogs during the early trade
at steady to slightly sha&ed figures
Shipping demand was again extremely
light, hoga obtained for shipping purposes
being a shade lower. The packer buyers
were again bears on the market and at
the outset were bidding prices G(f10v lower
and in eases fully a dime lower. Evi
dently they had large orders to fill and as
the supply was somewhat limited sellers
succeeded In disposing ot most of their
hogs only a nickel lower than the way
they sold hogs yesterday. In unite a
few cases,' however, the less desirable
grades had to suffer a decline of 510c
and most of the closing business wai
done on that basis.
Receipts foot up accoring to first esti
mates about seventy-six oars or 6,200 head,
as against 1.340 head a week ngo and 4,413
head on the corresponding day a yenr
sgo.i No strictly choice hogs were here.
A clearance of the receipts was effected

CaI 11. E Cattle receipts were very fair
for a Thursday, 1H0 cars being reported
In. This leaves the total for the four days
ai M,itw nead, just about the same aa
for the corresponding day last week and
larger than a year ago by almost 4,000
neaa. Tti market as a whole did not
show very much change.
Beef steers were In light supply and de
sirable kinds In good demand at steady
prices. The less desirable grades were a
little stow and the feeling weak.
Cows and heifers, though not very ac
tive, generally moved in about tne same
notches, as yesterday, there being no es
pecially new or interesting -temures to
the trade. Some salesmen who had a good
supply of stock cows and belters were
Inclined to quote them as a little easier
than earlier in the week.
The country demand for stock cattle
and feeders has been very fair and specu
lators cleaned up a good share of what
they . had on hand yesterday. As thero
were also quite a good many country
buyers In again this morning the demand
for desirable kinds was quite brisk and
offerings coming under that head changed
hands In very good season at fully steady
prices. Common and inferior kinds were
a little slow and weak, but that Is apt to
be the case most every day.

SHEEP There were no really prime
lambs on the market this morning. As
a very good demand for anything at all
desirable In the killing line was again
evident what lambs were here sold gen
erally lOjfiSc higher. A couple of strings
of fairly good lambs brought 37.26. Trade
in fat ewes showed about the same im
provement as lambs, prices showing If
anything a little more advance. Several
loads of choice ewes were on sale, the
best of them selling - as high as $4.40.
Another bunch of ewes which were not
quite as good brought $4.80. There were
practically not enough wef.hers or year
lings among today's offerings to afford
any tst of values, but ihe general
opinion was that It any were here they
would show in sympathy with lambs and
ewes about the same improvement. While
the movement was active the general
trade seemed to present a much quieter
appearance than yesterday.,
The supply amounted to very Httle
more than half of what arrived here lust
Thursday. The receipts foot up only
about 55 csrs, or 14,600 head, ss com
pared with 28,336 head a week ago, 18,770
two weeks ago and 16.619 head on the
same day last year. On the whole quality
of the offerings was below the standard
of the last few days back.

CINCINNATI, O.. Oct. 16.-(Speclal
Telegram.) Price Current says there Is
a tmall gain in the number of hogs sent
Into the market, but a continued liberal
shortage compared with a year ago. The
supplies now are somewhat variable as
to quality, being mostly fairly good. The
total western slaughtering was 386,000
hogs, compared with 360,000 the preceding
week. For the corresponding time last
year the number was 455,009. From March
1 the total Is 14,720,000, against 16.600,000 a
year ago. a decrease of 1,890,000 hogs. It
thus appears that the eight months of
the summer season, ending at the close
of this month, will fall short about 2,000.
000 hogs of the high record of western
slaughtering last year.
Prices of hogs have been maintained
and at the close the general average for
I'lomiiient markets is about 38.7". per 100
pounds, compared with $6.40 a year ago.
Number of hogs slaughtered since
