UTTLE DAMAGE DONE TO CORN
- ii
Oata Market Has Uttl Speculative
Xfirt, with a TuilmfT ' look
for Lower Prices Cash
Oats l arhaneed.
OMAHA, Neb.. Sept. 25.
There are some dangerously low tem
peratures in the northwest. Just how
far they extend into the corn com.try l
not indicated by the early messages
This is mentioned because any radical
act. on in corn will have Influence on the
wheat trade. The weather conditions are
advert for threshing and marketing lr
the northwest, and to that extent, at
least, the octlook is bullish. On the
other hand, the world's statistics on
wheat, tho domestic figures on increas
ing supplies, the certainty of sharp com
lietiton from both Canada and Kuatla In
selling wheat to Europe and thu light
volume of outside trade are all. on me
side of the sellers, who arc , patient
enough to wait for good swells. ' '
Ca ll wheat unchanged. '
It Is cloudy and cold over Nebraska and
other western crn slates. Mossiiges are
riving temperatures from 38 to 40 degrees,
but the weather reports are not .accom
panied by any claim, of damage.; to the
corn crop. It Will tnkt- later anvices to
show how corn ra.is"rs feel about . the
prenc.it cold sps'll. Kven withcait an
crop accdent thera U a fairly ' bullish
feeling In the . local trade, especially In
December contracts. For thirty days past
traders have repeatedly stated that there
was nothing In the old cash com ot
September sltoatlon to Jhstify the sellers
position In the current month. It now
looks more like a final squeeze in the
September than at any t me,, with re
ports of a big short Interest outstanding.
On strong swells, no doubt, .there will be
active selling of May com, ' especially If
the weather turns fine. '
Cash corn unchanged.
The oats market continues to be de
void of any particular speculative news.
The tendency Is to look for lower prices,
but mare pressure from the .actual prop
erty must take place before such a, re
sult It probable.
Cash oats, unchanged.

CATTLE Cattle receiots were
liberal again today. 302 cars being re.
ported -in. This makes the total for the
three days, 31,316 head, being tne largest
number for any similar period since the
opening oj the range season, and only
about 2,000 head smaller than for the
corresponding time year ago. Such
liberal receipts, together with unfavor
able advices from other selling points
naturally made buyers decidedly bearish,
so that the market opened siow and w.th
the feeling very weak. ,To make tht
trade still less active a number of the
trains were late In arriving at the yards
and there was also a great deal of sort
ing and shaping up to be done, with the
result that .the forenoon was pretty well
spent before any very great amount ot
business had been transacted.
Packers had been liberal buyers of
beef steers yesterday and Monday and
were not very much in need of cattle to
day, so that they were In a position tc
taae advantage of the large receipts and
lower markets at other DOints. The re
sult of this was that the general run of
killing cattle steers as well as cows and
heifers sold around lttgloc lower. Here
and there something, very good may not
have shown quite that much loss.
The yards were full of feeders, and they
were also 10ldC lower and rather slow
at that The big runs this week have
caused a break of 2u40c -on feeding cat
tie, and it would look as if there ought
to be a good opportunity for country buy
ers to pick up a good many cheap cattle

enough of the central and western states
to win. - .
The president made these statements at
the hqtne. pOils brother, Henry W. Taft.
where he went on his arrival from Wash
ington late today and received a number
of-his. friends and political associates.
The president's Interview follows:
"When I declared a few weeks ago that
I felt reasonably . sure ofvmy own re
election In' November and of the success
of the republican party, I was regarded,
by'some as entirely oversangutne and un
aware of the. situation. Today, however,
afe!r a , number of indications that the
republican party is still the dominant
paV.y, and that the expected growth of
democratic', strength has failed to ma
terialise,, my declaration Is shown . to
be. entitled to respect.
Effect of Third Party.
"The republicans necessarily will have
a reduced majority over 1908 because ot
the; presence of three tickets In the field,
but the, democratic party will suffer also.
The. combined strength of the third-term
party will not be enough to change tho
ultimate result- Five or six weeks ago It
was asserted generally that the repub
lican party would secure the vote of the
solid enst, including the New England
states, with the exception of Maine and
Vermont; that the democratic party would
maintain its hold on the solid south and (
that the tl)lrd-term party would secure
tile" solid west, leaving only the middla
west as debatable ground.
"Today, with . the election still one
month away," the republican party finds
itself with a strengthened hold on the
east, having) routed the third-term party
in Vermont and the democratic party In
Maine.
"The . third-term ' leaders recently con
ceded that we would pick the state of
Uttili : out of the - solid west and after
conferring-with Chairman Hllles and oth
ers recently lh the west there Is every
reason 'to believe that the republican
party "win'carry Michigan, Washington.
Idaho arit"" Wyoming. Moreover, if tho
proper ' kirjd -of a campaign is waged we
will ; carry, dregon,' Kansas and Minne
sota, where third-term strength has rap
idly waned since the recent tour through
that, section, by the party's candidate.'
"I am not familiar with the develop
ments in other western states, although
many good reports have come to me at
Beverly concerning them, but even with
the . states . already mentioned it can be
seen. that. ..there Is no longer a solid west
back of the. new party, but more nearly
a solid west i reunited' In support of the
republican : ticket. This strength, added
to the .indisputable republican hold on
the eastern . states, : constitutes in itself,
a sufficient strength to give success to
the party. : , ''
"It is scarcely necessary for' me to
point to the necessity of re-establishing
a-republican-majority In the house of
representatives. If this Is done I feel
confident that I will be able to have
placed on ' the statute books the work
men's compensation law, which urged
upon the last session, but which was
sent; to Oblivion by the democratic
house. " If the country will give the re
publican 'party" a complete victory In Its
congressional as well as Its presidential
ticket, a pcoper tariff revision will bo
speedily effected, with knewledge of the
facts . ascertained . by a tariff commis
sion which will harm no one and remedy
its preterit defects' . ., . .
