The Jewish New Tear, or Rosh' Hash
anah, falls this year on Thursday, Sep
tember 12. Like all Jewish holidays It Is
reckoned from evening to evening and Its
Initial service will be held on the evening
of the 11th. While, owing V the variance
between the solar and lunar systems of
calendatlon, it may appear to occur Irreg
ularly, It la definitely set in the Jewish
calendar as the first day of the seventh
month, Tishrt
It Is known scripturally as the New
Tear. In the Scriptures It Is termed
the "Day of the Memorial of the Blow
ing of the Trumpet" (Leviticus xxlli:24),
or simply as the "Day of the Blowing oof
the Trumpet". CNumbers xxlx:l).
The nature of. the festival Is what Its
name signifies, L e., a marking of the
passage of time and a monition of the
uncertain tenure of human Mfe. It does
not commemorate any. historical Incident
Nor does it make, its appeal, to the rad
ical consciousness of the Jews. Its appeal
is entirely to the present and to the in
dividual conscience. It is thoroughly unl
versalistic and can be responded to by all
Religionists of. whatever creed. , .
The day is observed seriously; and sol
emnly. ; It emphasizes the sense of Divine
guidance and at the same time of human
responsibility. The blowing of the trum
pet the Shofar or ram's horn, is the
peculiar service of the day. - It Is the
bugle, call of the spirit, arousing the
conscience In the contemplation of mis
spent hours, and awakening the Impulse
to make the new, coming year more
fruitful of noble and unselfish action.
The observance of the day is complete
alike by both the reform and orthodox
wings of the synagogue. Offices and
business "houses are closed and the house
of prsjyer Is thronged, with worshipers.
Services at Temple Israel,, will be held
Wednesday evening at 8 o'clock and
Thursday morning at 10 o'clock,. Rabbi
Cohn will speak at both services,' discuss
ing "The Nw Tear". In tha evening and
"Reconstruction . In , Judlasm" . In the.
morning. '
. Earnest Raymond Mlsner, an Omaha
reader, will read Mrs! E. M. Whltte
more'a "The Pink Rose," a story from
