Oats Market Still Holds Firm Despite

" Trade, .
OMAHA, Sept 4, 1913,
Considering; the overwhelming' receipts
of wheat at Minneapolis, Duluth, Kansas
City, St Louis and Chicago yesterday,
coupled with the weak and lower cables,
the net loss of la In wheat prioes for the
active months was moderate and natural.
The trade showed some disposition to
Support the market on the early decline,
Offerings were taken largely by wire
houses and some of the cleverest Individ
ual traders who were short wh-n the
the break came,- The cash premiums held
fairly well at Minneapolis, and tho mills
In that quarter are likely to take care -of
the September run of wheat. Grain men
feel that It will not do to press the sell
ing side of the market too hard until there
has boen some natural recovery from the
decline of tho last few days. Cash wheat
unchanged.
No one can deny that prices for the
new crops months will depend on the
weather conditions over the oorn belt
through September, Only those who are
inclined to Ignore the wide dlfferenoe be
tween the old and new com price and
believers in the 8,000,000 bushel crop are
pressing the selling side of the distant
months. The large conservative element
in the trade feels friendly to the Decem
ber option on the theory that the country
will not rush to ctntract its corn at such
a discourt undor prices for the old crop.
The, large sleeping short Interest In the
new crop months undertakes to cover
each time the market shows a firming
tendency. Accidents to the crop will be
on the side of the buyers. Cash oorn, un

opening of the range season. As com

last year there is a falling off of almost
6,000 head for the three days.

HOGS Early trade in hogs was mod
erately active with packers as the
heaviest buyers, speculators and shippers
being very small factors on the market.
Opening values ruled generally steady to
a nickel lower than yesterday's general
market for hogs having the best quality.
Buyers went around picking up the best
grades of mostly all weights during the
first rounds, as the supply of the good
light kinds was rather limited. ' After the
bulk of the best offerings had changed
hands business had less life than at the
opening, closing trade being slow and at
prices a big nickel lower. Rough heavy
packers and old sows did not sell very
well at any time and In some Instances
were almost a drug on the market. The
top, $8.46, was given for a load of choice
heavy hogs, consisting mostly of barrows
and weighing around 300 pounds. Re
ceipts were estimated at about 132 loads,
or 8,800 head, as against 7,393 head a week
ago and 6,773 head on the same day last
year."
SHEEP AND LAMBS Although feeder
buyers bought very sparingly yesterday
forenoon, practically everything In the
feeding line was taken out of first hands
early In the afternoon. The wet con
ditions of the offerings was a damper
on early business, but once trade, was
under way most of the' holdings were
disposed of freely at prices fully steady
with Monday's market When consider
ing the wet fleeces, the sales might pos
sibly look a little stronger.
A marked falling off In the receipts of
sheep and lambs was noted this morning
aa only about thirty-eight cars or 9,600
bead were reported In as against 26,000
yesterday, 13,750 last Wednesday', and
13,278 head on the corresponding day a
year ago. The hlg end of the supply was
made up of lambs, fat sheep being very
scarce. While there were not a great
many offerings on sale, some pretty good
killers were in evidence. .
There was a gooa strong demand, and
once trade was under -way the small sup
ply was quickly disposed of, practically
everything being taken out of first hands
before noon. Lambs were generally 10
15c higher and in some Instances 25c above
prices prevailing yesterday. Some pretty
choice lambs were on sale. As noted
above .fat sheep were vfery scarce, but
what were here sold at 10)5c advance.
A four-car string of prime Nevada lambs
brought as -much as $6.90, and some fat
ewes sold at $4.10. About a load of feed
ing yearlings commanded $5.20.

Companies' Business,
NEW YORK, Sept. 4.-The moat note
worthy feature of today's dull and Ir
regular stock msrket was the growing
Importance f money as a factor. For a
time the list gave signs of on inclination
to shake off the heaviness of the pre
vious day, although opening prices were
generally lower, but this was followed bv
a buying movement and short ooverinir
which soon established gains of a point
or more some of the more representa
tive liuuei.
In the early afternoon when call loans
were quoted at 4 per cent and time rates
went higher, the market sagged until
little was left of the rise, except In cer
tain of the higher priced specialties, no
tably the tobaccos, which repeated some
of their spectacular performances. ;
The most cheerful note sounded dur
ing the day was contained In a state
ment dealing with th operations of the
leading equipment companies, showing
steady Increase of business. Earnings of
these companies for th first half of the
current year are well ahead of the en
ure previous year.
Private advices from Berlin, where
private discounts were again higher. In

CHICAGO. Sept. 4.-Firmnes In the
wheat market today seemed to be based
largely on a feeling that as the market,
had declined three days in succession a;
rally was due. Closing prices were firm,
Ho to Ho higher than last night.
Wheat finished at virtually the high'
point of the day. There was evident sup
port on soft spots. Plenty pressed for
sal, however, on the bulges. '
Owing to car shortage In .Kansas,'
farmers there, It was said, were being;
advised to hold their wheat and stopj
threshing. This had considerable to do;
with preventing the market from declin
ing tt any time more than )4C under last :
night. Outs'de limits for December wer
91o and 924c with the close ic net'
higher at MS'c. '
Material strength developed In corn
largely as a result of the possibility that
frost winch appeared in the far north
west Might reach tho corn belt tonight
Cah prades ware In good demand. No.
2 yellow, TiWrTOVac. Deoember closed flrmj
Sc up at 65c.
Good domestic demand for oats pre
vailed. Receivers said consignment notices
were lighter. December closed $232Hot
a rise of "nfiSc compared with last night
Despite lighter stocks than expected,
provisions eased off. In the end pork
was down 174o to 17)4S20c, lard, 24gi12)4ci
and ribs. 7)417)4o.
