OMAHA. Aug. 23. 1912.
The bears In the wheat trade have made
a very poor fight of late. They are dis
appointed In not being able to force the
early months off to the 90c level, as was
predicted so freely a month ago. The
trouble is they counted on an enormous
rush of spring wheat to help break the
prices, and the spring crop has scarcely
begun to move yet. The weather has
upset the calculations. The'bl? milling In
terests in the northwest are getting away
with about all the choice wheat. Short
sellers are timid because they know the
cash and September wheat is in strong
hands. Theoretltally the market is a
bearish situation because of the large
yield, but for the present there Is more
than an average lighting chance for those
who buy on reactions of one cent or more.
Cash wheat unchanged to 4c higher.
For a month brokers have Issued warn
ings against being found on the selling
side of September corn. The further sharp
advance in cash corn prices yesterday
and the scarcity of corn on the tables to
meet current demands, the Inability of
houses with corn bought to arrive to se
cure the same from the country, all
helped to make the situation more acute.
As for the new crop months, there is
considerable bearish feeling for a long
pull, but for the immediate future, w.th
the crop not yet made, and the December
at such a remarkable discount under tne
cash level, there Is a feeling of uneasiness
among short traders. Only a portion of
the heavy short interest in the December
option has been covered and the market
presents a strong front. Cash corn un
changed to 14c higher.
There lias been ver heavy shipping and
export sales of lat?jnd the strength In
other markets has helped to give oats
futures a fair recovery from the bottom
point of the season. looking ahead it
seems reasonable for the demand to be
filled up soon and heavy marketing to
continue. Gash oats unchanged to Vio
lower.

the cities:
NEW YORK. Aug. 23.-With the valume
of trading much under that of the pre
ceding session, today's stock market gave
another exhibition of Irregularity and pro
fessionalism. Coppers continued the
prominent feature, with recurrent pres
sure against the railway division. The
Panama canal bill was again regarded as
a contributing factor, but this was offset
In a measure by hopes of an early ad
journment of congress. Rumors of a
proposed suit by the government against
the American Telephone and Telegraph
company while not conr'.rmed In official
sources, caused some early selling of
that stock.
United States Steel was under less re
straint than recently, but (ailed to pre
serve more than an even balance, de
spite flattering forecasts of the current
quarter's earnings and an advance In
the price of pig Iran. Miscellaneous spe
cialties had brief periods of activity at
higher prices, the tobacco Issues, con
solidated gas, agricultural, chemical and
Mexican petroleum gaining from one to
three points, with nine points for Amer
ican snuff.
Business became stagnant in the final
hour, but prices crept slowly upwards to
the best of the day, with greatest strength
In Amalgamated Copper and allied stocks,
as well as American Smelting. The rise
In these received no Impetus from state
ments that copper metals were sold at
18 cents. The one marked exception to
the general rise was Chicago & North
western, which yielded 2 points.
Estimated week's loss of cash by local
banks ran as high as $8,000,000, but It was
generally believed that this drain would
soon bo remedied by disbursements of
pensions and other government operations.
Bank exchanges continue to expand and
compilations submitted by the commer
cial agencies make the most satisfactory
comparison with recent years in some
months.
Bonds were Irregular, with weakness In
Illinois Central refunding 4s. Total sales,
par value, aggregated $1,273,000. United
States government bonds were unchanged
on call.

HOGS It was largely a packer market
again today, as the number of hogs
bought on shipping account was very
smalt Packers, speculators and shippers
were all engaged In the the early trade,
and paid prices 'mostly 6e htgber for'
good nogs, speculators la some cases pay
ing as much as 10c higher than yester
day's market. More hogs ware secured
for speculative purposes than tor ssveral
days back. Most of the mixed And pack
ing grades were picked up at prices a
nickel Ugher, though quite a few sold
at steady figures. As on yesterday old
heavy sows were hard to sell and were
entirely neglected by buyers until almost
everything else bad seen disposed of.
Trade showed considerable life during the
first hours, becoming somewhat alow at
the close. With about sixty-three loads,
or 4,247 head, being reported o the mar
ket, almost everything had changed hands
by 11 o'clock. A couple of leads of good
light hogs made a top at 88.44 a nicker
higher than the highest price yesterday.
This Is the highest price paid for -a full
load of hogs since Saturday, when $8.45
was top.

was late In opening and early trade was
slow and dull. In addition to today's re

that were held over from yesterday. The
apparent dullness of the early trade
might bo attributed to the fact that pack
