1 Desperate Desmond Claude Eclaire, Hero, Falls-for a Very Old Stunt Done by the Villain By Hershfield (ESMOND, I HAVS TOO. KOSAMOrVft? : .' I-DISCOVERED. On the Olympic field Desperate Des mond U horrified to find that nit pret ence has been obaerved by Claude Eolalre, the hero, whose sweetheart la even now hidden away by Desmond, Well does the villain know that no mercy can be ex pected, from the Infuriated Claude or any of the American athletes who may be aroused by his cries. Desmond is up against it. fr..L ucgc, L I wfr Jr (CORSES'. MOST FOICl fiVELL .WHAT Do'fCUT IT.ITlMSISTwA. Just as Claude is about to get his hands on the fleeing Desmond the clear notes of a bugle ring out and everyone comes to a halt It is the signal for the athletes to fall in for the great review of all nations by the King of Sweden. Claude must forego his private revenge for the moment, no matter how Justified he la in pursuing the villain to the end. Desmond breathes freely again. ni.-IN THE LINE. Quickly all the athletes line up in an imposing row before the king. Desmond, who Is standing next to Claude, knows that his only chance to escape Is to do something to baffle our hero while the king Is inspecting the flower of the world's athletes. Before so many eyes, however, It will be no easy matter to get away with anything crooked. A sim ple plan is the only one that can succeed. IV. THE TAP ON THE SHOULDER. A plan occurs to Desmond. It is so old and so simple that he believes its , very audacity will win success. Quickly : the villain reaches his arm around Claude's back and taps our hero on the shoulder furthest from Desmond's place. Every school boy has worked the trick and usually It puzzles the person , on whom it is used. So in this case Desmond Is naturally hopeful Claude will be fooled. V.-THE ARGUMENT. Sure enough Claude Eclaire, ."unsus picious hero that he is, falls for Des mond's old ruse and turns sharply to the man on his right, asking him what he means by tapping his shoulder. Naturally the other athlete, knowing that he bad not touched Claude, is offended by our hero's brusque tone. Here we have all the elements of a first class argument. If not a regular fight. VI. THE BRAWL. . "Ay ban the boy!" cries Desperate Des- .rnond, "and ay skol elope with you"." Claude Eclaire has become involved in a brawl with the athlete he accused of tap ping him on the shoulder and In the en suing disturbance Desmond quickly slips away to the place where he had secured Rosamond. The vllalln Is now about to flee wtlh her. How Claude gets on the trail will be shown tomorrow. S - ' ' ' I i 11 ' I ww.m nnnnnw . . I ' ui mi u r.i. . .... i . m w . . .". . . .1 .. . l . . . .
