IV.-A HUMANE HERO. t
As Claude is preparing for his lonely
celebration of the Fourth he also hears
the loud barks of the dogs, which are
evidently In a state of the utmost excite
ment. Our hero, who cannot bear to see
an animal suffer, thinks that some .bad
boys must have tied firecrackers to the
dogs' tall to see them run yelping away,
and he starts at once to save the poor
creatures from further trouble. Claude
does not know that this kind act will
lead to his discovery of Rosamond.

Desmond Is surrounded by. such a num-
ber of Eskimo dogs that he cannot move '
a step. 'The Explorer's suit which he is
wearing as a disguise, proves the scoun
drel's undoing. The pack of dogs grows
excited. The animal recognises the coat
as that of their master, and flock eagerly
around " in . the hope of being fed. .The
beautiful Rosamond Is frightened at the
. savage appearance of the dogs, which
are destined, however, to be the means
of saving her from Desmond.
