BASE BALL AS A SPECTACLE
Flta the Crowd, Stirs the Blood, and
la the Best Game to
Watch.
Th costly construction at Fenway
park, Boston, not only please the eye,
they start reflection. Like the massive
amphitheater now built in Philadelphia,
St Louis, - Cleveland, Chicago and New
York; ,.Iike those provided for Greater
New York, Cincinnati and Detroit, this
costly home of the Boston team has
worded in brick, steel and cement a prac
tical question: Will base ball last, or will
it some day leave these great works as
empty as the rinks from which the roller
skating eras ebbed out?
What new game the future may start,
no ono; or course, can tell. Base ball
itself was but lately in th future; its
Initial dates are 1846 and 1870. And yet
were able' theorists of play commissioned
to devise outright a game that ware bet
ter suited for entertaining a crowd, large
or imall, and better adapted for clean
management upon player' merit, th
chance would be strongly against their
success. For in remarkable degree base
ball combine th three good point
Reeded in a gam that seeks to win and
hold a peopU favor. ,
To begin with, base ball, both In lay
out of the field and in number of player,
ha the right scale. It just fits a crowd
big enough to stir the blood by mere as
sembling and still more by the applause
or disappointment-. In this particular baa
ball surpasses tennis and cricket alto
gether.. On the other hand, the scale is
small enough to let the crowd inclose and
center In upon the game; herein base ball
surpasses any well-tracked racing, and
especially regattas. In pcdnt .of time, also,
the scale is right .A game comfortably
tills the better' part of an afternoon, and,
unlike foot ball, it Involves no dull be
tween Ulna for the crowd to kill as beat
It may. V.; -. - ...!.--,,
Further, with these good - proportions,
the gam follow a singularly clear, open,
yet fair plan. The men are not huddled
one upon another; they are so widespread
upon the field that each ha hi own sta
tion,' hi own duties, hi, own chance tor
the play that brings the cheering crowd
to its feet Nor Is the gam pageant-like.
It has' one evershlftlng point of Interest
the hall Itself, continually in air, chal
lenging no one know which player next
yet simple in Itself and easily kept in
view. The constant shift of aides from
field, to '- bat brings every man, turn by
turn in prearranged order into contest
with nine ether men at once. The gam
I a kind of simplified drama; uch to
be sure as Euclid, nodding over diagrams,
might have dreamed; but none tha lea a
drama. In which tensely Interacting play
ers are staged well apart, except as her
and there for a moment th chance ot th
gam may bring them close. ,
