TWO CONVENTIONS COMPARED Eye Witness of Both at Opening Contrasts Methods Employed by Norman Mark and V ictor BY EDtiAIl f. SJVVDER. BALTIMORE, June 26. -(Special Tl egram.j "This Is a reactionary conven tion, and yet I got more votes for tem porary chairman than I had any reason to expect," said Colonel W. J. Bryan last night as he was making a quiet but rather ineffectual effort to get away from a raft of peopls who hava crowded his rooms in the Belvlder aver since th convention adjourned. Mrs. Bryan divided the honor with her distinguished husband and having a marvoUous memory for names and facas, she was everywhere the gracious woman keenly alive to th important occasion and giving everybody a most cordial welcome to th headquarters of the Ne braska democracy and Incidentally In th room of the three-time candidal for president and one who may be a candi date for tb fourth time, should th "reactionaries' lose one oog In th wheel. The Commoner followed his opening sentence as follows: "I hav no statement to make. 1 know of nothing that need to be explained. The vote on temporary chairman shows the attitude of the convention. My speech shows my view on th subject. I await developments without any Im patience. I do not know of anything to add to what I hav already said." Mr. Bryan was questioned as to cer tain planks In the platform and replied that he had tome Idea on th subject which he would present to the resolu tions committee. His manner and vole rather indicated that he would not be chairman of the resolutions commltt but there may be som who would Ilk Bryan to formulate th platform so that he could not consistently say that the reactionaries really dominate the con vention. , . Clark-. All at Stake. looking at the result ot th vote on temporary chairman from a most disin terested point of vlw I am led to th conclusion that Speaker Clark has put all of hi eggs in one basket In making a deal with Tammany but supporting Par ker for the votes of New York on th first ballot. Murphy needed th Clark, Harmon and Underwood vote to win the election for th man ' from Esopus and yet with all th manipulation, Jockeying and undoubtedly pledges of a substantial character, the venty-thr majority given Parker Is but a drop In the bucket. With the first ballot over, many of Clark's supporters will leav him for they are not at heart with him and will "fly the coop" early In tb gam. Speaker's Strenstth to Dwindle. In the Judgment ot old-time politician Clark's greatest strength will b shown on the first two or thre ballots, when New York will go to him. Then should he get Harmon's vote, as 1 now rumored he will, the speaker of the house may read his title clear. But there ar those among th delegates who will leave Clark attar th flrt ballot and go either to Wilson or Bryan, for I am convinced that Bryan Is flirting with the nomlna tlon on th ground that a progressive must be the nomine and that th sac of Falrvlew has pretty hearty com to the conclusion that Clark is a reaction ary. The democratic gathering of today was very much noisier than the opening lay of the republican convention last Tues day. Two Chairmen Compared. Norman E. Mack, chairman of th national democratlo commltt had less control over the convention than had Victor Rosewater ovr the republicans. He seemed Impotent In getting, th at tention of the audience and his asso ciates were aquaJly Ineffective until the convention completely drifted out of hi hands and suggested bedlam. Even Bryan had difficulty at time to hold the attention ot the delegates and It re quired a squad of thirty police to march through the aisles befor any semblance ot order was secured. . One thing that Impressed me forcibly about the present conventidn and that of last week Is the presence at this convention of a large number of gray heads aa against the number of young men In the republican convention. The wheelhorses of democracy ar her In numbers and if expressions go for any thing, they ar here to help nominate a candidate with whom they believe they can win rather than play In the hands of the republicans as they' have been doing- for the last sixteen years. Wire from Dahlman C'lab, Felix McShane, the sheriff of Douglas county, received a telegram today from Dan Horrlgan, secretary of th Dahlman democracy which Is self-explanatory. The telegram reached McShan after th vote on temporary chairman was taken and therefore could have no bearing on the results, but Us audacity takes ones breath. Th telegram Is as follows: J. McShane: Convention Hall, Baltimore. At big meeting of the Dahlman democracy held tonight the following resolutions were adopted: Resolved, that we have more confidence In the wisdom of th national committee than In the whims of a would-be dic tator and urge th Nebraska delegation to support the recommendation of the committee for temporary chairman: Resolved that the democratlo national convention should secure a pledge from V. J. Bryan to support the democratic national ticket this year so that he can not bolt it as he am the democratic nomination of James C. Dahlman for governor of Nebraska in U10. Where Nebraska Stands. Thirteen of th sixteen votes from Ne braska are not for Clark to the last ditch nor anyways near the chasm. They are for Bryan, and there may come a time when they will cast their votes for the "peerless leader" befor a nomlna OCEAN STEAMSHIPS Newest and Finest Continental steamer S.S. The fact that a laTge majority of tY delegates are honestly for their felloe citizen, William Jennings ' Bryan, came near causing' a personal clash between Johnny Cutright of the Lincoln Star, Colonel John Maher and A. S. Tlbbettf In the rooms of the Nebraska delegation today. Naturally the feeling Is running high over the sharp division between th rival camps. Cutright, who, while a warm friend of Bryan, does not like th attitude of the delegation in talking about some other presidential candidate than Champ Clark, for whom they are Instructed, started In to tell about tb herculean effort J. Fred Williams of Boston had to make to get some demo crat to introduce him at a meeting in Lincoln shortly after Bryan's birthday dinner. U .lii-tni!, who attended the din ner, returned to Lincoln three days after that event to make a speech favoring either Clark or Wilson, and he did not care much who it was. 1 Cutright made the remark that Williams had a dickens ot a time to get some prominent democrat to present him to the audience, which Judge Tlbbetts relented with all the power of which he Is possessed, and the talk grew louder and the people crowded around the speak ers until It looked as if a personal en counter was Imminent when cooler coun sels prevailed and the affair was passed over. Nrliraakana In Evidence, Mrs. Gilbert M. Hitchcock was an Inter ested onlooker today at the convention, having a seat next to 8enator Norrls Brown, who cam over from Washington today to see how the democrat harmon ised In the making of a temporary chair man. They had seats on the left of the platform and were the observed of all observers, next to Mrs. Bryan and Mrs;' Mack.
