In conservative quarters the opinion
was held that It might have been wiser
for the directors to reduce the dividend,
only an Infinitesimal part of which was
earned.
Further suspension of proposed In
creased freight rates by the Interstate
Commerce commission and adverse rail
road reports combined to add to the feel
ing of depression produced by the Steel
itstement.
Fully one-third of the business of the
first two hours was in teel, which with
Colon Pacific furnished half of the entire
dealing for that period. Hteel had a
"w'lde opening." Its Initial offering be
ing represented by a block of 1.500 shares
at TOHtfTO'sc. as compared with 7!V at
yesterday's close. Cnton Pacific also
dlsplsyed acute weakness at the outset.
but recovered much of Its loss, only to
fall lower than before at the next de
cline. The anthracite shares with American
Smelting, which was active and strong on
rumors of an increased dividend, were
slso the only Issues of prominence to
shake off the reactionary tendency.
In the last hour the genersl list moved
towards the best quotations of the day
with Smelting and Amerhan can Ihe
more pronounced issues of strength. Final
dealings brought out more activity and
Increaslag strength, which not only ef
faced a majority of the previous losses,
but resulted In numerous net gain.
Condition and rates In the local money
market remain unchanged, with Increased
offerings of commercial paper. Other
wise the inquiry for raeh continued light.
