It eras only natural that vhMt vsluee
decline after such continuous and sharp
advances. While crop news has been
extietnely bullish reports now are telling
of some improvement In the general ap
pearance of the growing plant. These
messages nsturally encourage selling
operations together with profit taklnc
by traders who are friendly to the buy
ing side or the market.
I'nder these conditions an over-sold
market Is easily established and sharp
upturns will likely follow.
There Is a natural heavy feeling In the
corn trade, Some of the most bullish of
tne trsde have taken profits. While vslues
are liable to sag still lower, the commer
cial position of cash corn Is still strong.
'tne selling side Is -now favored by the
majority, out these same shorts ar in
tne habit of covering suddenly.
The wheat market acted topneavy and
prices broke sharply at the opening.
Heavy selling of both long and short
wheat was the feature of the day's trad
ing. Cash wheat waa unchanged to 1c
lower.
Sentiment In corn has turned bearish
aad with wheat easing ok, there Is no
enough support on tne buying side to

CHICAGO. April &. -Wheat gave signs
today that the U-csnt advance In the last

A rush to sell whast was apparent from

In this connection the fact waa noted

Predictions that the I'nlted Siatea risi

vorable outloolt to the controversy be
tween the railroad managers and the lo
comotive engineers waa a moat important
factor in shaping tbe course of today's
stoca msrset.
I? was known long before the opening
of business thst a halt had been called
in the threatened strike, but it wss not
until later that official announcement
was made f the wlllingneaa of the en
glneers to accent mediation.
Yesterday's lethargy and heaviness gsve
way to energy, which resulted In a num
ber of material advances at the very out
set. Theee were were soon extended snd
by mlddav gains of 1 to I points were
general. There were a rew exceptions to
this tendency, notably In the tobacco
group, softie of which suffered severe
declines, presumably In connection with
the adoption yesterday by the I'nlted
Htstes senste of a resolution calling for
a review of the recent decision In the
Americsn Tobacco case.
Heading, which sold ex-dlvldend of 14
per cent, was the most prominent feature
of the day. Initial dealings were on sn
unususl scale and the stork more than
recovered Its dividend In the first hour.
In the early afternoon It was selling over
4 points above yesterday's low price.
i tie entire list wss stimulated to a
higher level In the course of the morn
ing, with little diminution of business,
but In tne afternoon trading fell off ap
preciably. Various obscure Issues took
the place of the speculative leaders in
ths Ister session, at whlcb time the mar
ket was going through natural process
of digestion.
Prices j were disposed to yield frac
tional!) -on heavy realising for profits,
but 8 not her buvtnv movement In Reed

period there were some contrary move
ments In the apeclsltlea. .Sears A Roe
buck added very aunstantlally to Its pre
vious rise, witn a gain of points on
American Suaer. while rentral Leather
and Bethlehem flteel declined.
The closing waa strong, with ths us us I
recessions frum the top. Inismational
Mercantile Marine bonds and tbe nre-
ferred stork were In better demand and
made some recovery from their recent
hesvlnesa.
In banking circles some attention was
paid to the renewal of loans in this
market by London, which were made on
the basis of m per cent for thirty days.
Revival of demand from abroad waa said
to be -ue to unexpected requirements
and postpnnejnent of expected ease. The
nntisn trans reports tor March were fa
vorable, on .the whole., desalts soms
gloomy forebodings prompted by the re
cent Industrial upheaval In Ureal Britain.
local monetary conditions wsrs de

Interior, amounting thus fsr this week to
almost S,,0M, haa slotted ne misgiv
ings. The annual report of the Oenersl Elec
tric company, showing a falling off in
earnings, waa without affect on the
stork, which took a prominent part In
lite oey s rise.
Bonds were strong, srlth marked gains

In most respects ths market was a repe
tition of yesterday a trade and while de
sirable klnde found a ready sale at fully
sieaoy rigures mere was mors or less
difficulty In moving the- half fat and
warmed up grade. However. It was sub
stantially a steady market, although the
general movement was rather Sluggish
aa tar as the ordinary grades are oon-
cernea.
A better tone osemed to pervade ths
market for cows and heifers and In some
cases ths more desirable klnde eold to
better advantags than en yesterday. Out
let for common and canning stock Is
comparatively narrow at present and the
market is ratner uneven and uncertain
on anything ot this kind. Oood hsifsry
stock, howsver. Is selling about as hish
as at any time. Veal calves were In rather
llbetal supply and quotable about stesdy
while the trend te value waa lower on
euus. stags ana rougn stock generally.
Freeh recelbla of stork cattle and feed
Ing steers wars rather libera! and the
supply In ysid traders hands waa larger
than dealrable. Demand from the country
conunuea aiaappoiniilig ana mere was a
lower trend to values sii along the line.
Choice light weight steers found a ready
outlet, but the ordinary tun uf llgnt

HOOS Enough hogs were received at

advantage In the trade, but everybody
needed large droves and the market was
fairly well sustained, prices dropped a
notch, ruling generally a nickel lower,
and efforts to cheapen costs slin further
were usually unsuccessful. Receipts
were estimated at li.no heed and bulk
consisted of raised snd butcher stock,
the same as on all daya recently.
Despite a run of satd-wtntsr propor

absent and business .during the eeny

broad and healthy demand. Movement

SHEEP-Moderate receipts of sheep and
'smba, made more attractive by a heavy
percentage of high-grade stock, combined
to put yesterda 's large advance on a
legitimate basis. The market ruled firm
from the start with packers buying "freely
ill along the line.
From a selling viewpoint, trade 1 sd
most of the good points of an ldi-al ses
sion. Supply wss estimated at ( 20 head
and hulk consisted of fst. wooicl Iiunbs,
Including a lot of Mexicans. Aside from
one or two shipment! of wethers and two
or three packages or ewes, there were
no sheep on sale.
The Mexican lambs in the fleece sold
at Di.iVaH., theae prices buying about
nine loads. Shorn lambs were ' rather
scarce, a good class moving at 17.26 with
Inlr clippers at 46.40. This wide dls-
crepsncy In prices was also apparent in
wooled lamb trade, the range in values
amounting to over 11,
In the sheep department, shorn wethers
rroukht tana snd wooled ewos sold from
tn-uu downward. Not enough sheep hsve
been coming in lately to renect accurate
price levels, however, and any compari
sons are necessarily founded upon con
lecture. Feeders ser rare exceptions and the
country demand appeared to be equally
small. There existed a lair demand for
fat shearing lambs, the same as recently.
and some toppy westerns sold on contract
at the even money, iva). Yesterday a
country buying did not exceed 600 head.
