April .-Cncertalnty concerning the outcome of the differences between the eastern railway managers and the locomotive enalneers was the the foremost factor In today's business on the stock exenange. There were otner developments In the course of the day that served to check any manifestations of a bullish character. Advices were that flood condltiona are graver; that winter wheat In llllnola. Ohio and In diana had been severely damagl and that general trade conditions are not quite up to the same period of hut year. The adoption of a resolution by tne I'nited states senate calling for a re new of the American Tobacco company care as decided by the I'nlted States cir cuit court caused an abrupt decline In some of the former subsidiaries of the company. The senate also took a hand In the proposed dissolution of the Inter national Harvester company and the I'nlted Stales supreme court rendered a decision the effect of which makes for more reason ble rates to shippers. The market was dull und sagging for the greater part of the day In the first hour and the last. Mora or less pres sure wss directed against the standard stocks especially. In the latter session, but a sudden buying movement In Head ing stiffened the entire list. Closing prices wiped out a majority of the ma terial declines and net losses, except In a few instances, were scarcely mors than fractional. It Is not unlikely that the strength snd activity of Reading was due to the fsct that It sells ex-dlvldends tofnorrow. which In Itself would naturally indues some short covering. Kelsxatlon of foreign demand for cash resulted in another reduction of time rates here, the quotation for three and four months being per it under last week's. The subtreastiry was again the medium for the slnpment of currency to New Or leans snd San Kranclsco. Ths bond market was Inclined to sag with some support In tha better known Lissues. Demand waa of a healthy character and with generally favorable sd vices from eastern markets ths local trade was practically steady with last week' close, although the movement was not nt all brisk and some of the pllner grades wer hard to mov. On th whole, however, It was practically a stesdy market and a clearance was mad in very good aeason. There ws rather mora life to th mar ket for cow and heifer than toward the close of last week and In some instances price were undoubtedly a little stronger, slthough th general market could not be quoted more than steady. Demand was reasonably broad as there waa quite a little Inquiry from outside butchers In sddltlon to th usual good buying by locsl packers, but ther w a msnlfest hesitancy on the part of all classes of buyers to nay any stronger figures. Veal calve wer ouotably steady at last week s decline and nun, ataga, etc., . louna a ready outlet ot steady figures. Over 1.0M took caul and feeder wer carried over from last week' supply so that yard trader wers not at all anxious for the limited fresh supplies and trade was rather slow. Strictly desirable light rattle commanded good, firm figures, but the medium nnd common stuff was rather dull and In some case lower. Volume of business wa small. Less than 3,000 head arrived, mostly tamo, and packers nought freely from the start, cleaning up the entire run within the first two hour of trading. Compared with values at last week' close the gen eral market was usually quoted about a quarter higher. Lamb trade furnlahed the greater num ber of sales, toppy Mexicans moving at I' 30. the highest prices paid since June of 1910. Shorn lamb of good to choice grade found an outlet at 17.10. There were no springers on esle. Only two or three small hunches of ewes arrived and the amount of business transacted In matured mutton waa nec essarily too limited to afford anything like a fair test of values. Attractive ewes were "wanted at K.OMT6.I3. No feeders of conaequence arrived, but there existed an urgent shearing demand for fat wooled offerings, some pretty good lamb going back into, th country on a speculative shearing order af 17.90. Last week's actual buy of feeder and shrarera amounted to a short S.uOO head. Quotations on sheep and lambs: Lambs, good to choice, t7.90rit.40: lambs, fair to good. !7.50&-:.9O; lambs, shorn.
