to hasten the work of Identification. Old
stage driver, have been called upon to
Identify many of the points of interest
and the location of stage stations along
the various trails At Julesburg. Colo..
the old station where Jules and Sladehad,
their combat, a fight which later resulted
In th. loss of Jules- ears, has been ldentl
fleld and will be preserved. It has been
proposed to have the governor get aside
independence rock, on th. California trail
in Wyoming, as a national monument.
This rock was a famous .topping place
In early days, and Is covered with the
name, of thousands of early day trans
continental tourists, scratched deep Into
the granite.
Resides the main trails across tha con
tinent there were many other stage trails
that had much to do with making tha
west, but whose course will soon be lost

them. The old Smoky Hill stage trail
across Kansas and eaatt-rn Colorado to
Denver Is practically wiped out, owing
to the settlement of the plains. Thl. old
trail penetrated th. heart of the hostile
Indian country and was tha scene of
many exciting adventure. In the 'bus. but
even the old Smoky Hill driver, have
difficulty In tracing tne route tooay. rne
same Is true of the several routes to
Deadw-ood, every foot ot which Is replete
with historic interest.
The main line of mage, across the con
tinent was several time, ahlfted on ac
count of Indian depredation.. The most
sweeping change wag made in 1K62, when
Ren" Holl.day, the genius ot the over
land stage business, moved the line sev
eral hundred miles south and effected the
change without missing a 1. 11 or delay
ing a passenger. The old line . followed
the North Platte and tho Sweetwater,
over South pass, and the new road led
by way of Julesburg to Denver, north
from Denver to Fort Lupton, thence
across the Laramie plains. In southern
Wyoming, and then due west through
Uridger pass, where the old trail was
Joined and tho Journey continued to Salt
Lake.
Moat of the .tag. stations and other
buildings erected along these old stage
trail, fell Into ruin long ago, but there
ar a few structures worth preserving.
The easiest mean, of Identification I. by
the natural monument, marking most of
(he trails. Chief among these Is Inde
liendence rock, which Is said to have
been named by the celebrated exploror
Captain Bonneville on account of Its
solitary aspect, rising as It doe. Inde-
liendent ot all other rock. In the vicinity.
Fremont and other explorers mention the
rock many times. When the tide of Cali
fornia gold seeker began flowing across
the country the rock was a favorite camp
ing place, A. early a. 184i emigrants
gathered at the rock to celebrate the
Fourth of July, It being on record that
on the Fourth of that year there were
about 1.000 California and Oregon emi
grant, gathered there to celebrate Inde
pendence day. Old wagon hubs were
loaded with powder and placed in the
crevices of the rock, producing explo
sions that sounded like the work of a
battery of artillery.
Many ot those who died on the way
across the continent were buried In the
vicinity of Independence rock, said their
epitaphs can still be read on the granite.
Probably the moat Impressive funeral held
there was In ISC. On July 4 of that year
a large number of emigrants bad gathered
there for a celebration, when a train
came In bearing the body of a young
man who had been accidentally killed
while cleaning his rifle that morning.
The celebration was deferred, and In tha
afternoon a Masonic funeral was held
tor the young emigrant, who wa buried
! at the foot of the great rock. General
Fremont w.s among those who carved
their names on Independence rock, as
were many of the old trappers and fur
tradeis On thl. account, as well as on
account of the prominence of Independ
ence rock as a stopping place In the stage
coach days. It has been proposed to have
the rock set aside as a national monu
ment, under the act of congress giving
the president power to segregate such
places of Interest In the public domain.
