STEEL RESUMES LEADESSBIP 1st lAtcr easioa Tradlag Meat Frsw larat la Staadard Railway Creap, lacladlag HIU Isaaea aad la lea Pacific. NEW TORK, April 4 -The stock mar ket today threw off Its apathy of the two preceding sessions and resumed the upward movement of last month. The movement differed from that of March, in that the copper and allied securities were less conspicuous participants. United xtatea Kteel today assumed Its former leadership and sold up to 71a, Its best quotation since last beptember. Dealing in this stock aggregated about M,uuo shares. The activity and strength of Steel waa caused probably by the celerity wltn which the corporation's .6W,0 i per cent subsidiary bonds were taken. Adverse comment aocomiwnled the new high records In American Can, common and preferred. because of the eeeminKly manipulative character of the rise. Public interest In these and kindred securities has st no time been especially keen and the floating supply of the stocks has In variably -been limited. The Tobacco stocks moved In spectacular fashion. Liggett at Myers rose 7 points, with ad vances of 3S in Lorillard, 4 In Ameri can Tobacco and 4S In American Snuff. In the later session the movement was most prominent In the standard railway group. Including the Hill Issues, St. Paul, Union Pacific and Louisville a: Nash ville. Renewed strength In the Wabash Issues, Including the refunding 4s, was attributed to the entrance Into the com pany of a new and Important financial interest. . , Money on call rosa to 5 per cent, the highest figure since last January, Just before the close, but It failed to produce any Impression on prices, final quota tions being at or very near th day's best. Judging from today' market, th Inter ests back of the rise are giving them selves no concern respecting the mone tary situation. Local banks suffered an other drain by the heavy withdrawals for out-of-town Institutions, especially In the west and southwest, where money Is In demand to meet revived business con ditions. It Is estimated thst the banks In the Clearing House association will lose not leas than fj.000.oiio nn the week-, but the effect on the reserves Is aa yet uncertain. It is well within the range of probability, however, that tbl Item may snow furtner uepreciation. A further rise of 3' In Canadian Pa cific waa explained In the road e gross gain of 00.1100 for the fourth week of March. Norfolk Western Increased Its February net by I142.O0U. Chesapeake Ohio by $m.ot and Burlington by lin.Ono, with a nominal Increase for Rio Grande, seaboard Air Una fell behind by 1JI,. Bonds were firm. Total aales, par value. tJ.7u&.ax.
