He was a pioneer constable, served as a deputy under Sheriff Hurley, and became local ticket agent for the Hannibal at St. Joseph railroad's steamboat line be tween Omaha and St. Joseph.. He finally became confidential agent of President Clark of the Union Pacific and called himself the "outside general manager." In .this position, which he filled for years, he bought the Belt lie right-of-way -for tha Missouri Pacific, then sea trolled by th Union Pacific. He saved bis money In) the early day and put It Into land In the Elkhont val ley, selling It later at great profit and becoming very wealthy.
