    Desperate Desmond
tJk Lucky Accident Enables the Hero to Catch W
the Abscounding Villain.
ByHershfield

lon FrIJole. the dreaded rnlh bandit,
has the unfortunate Rosamond In hts
power, and Desmond la quick to reajlie
Ma chance of getting possession of the
SlrL lroduc!ng hi check book he quickly
makes one In favor of the hrtgand
and Rosamond Is handed over to the
scoundrel, whoso trhrralng has separated
her fraro her heroic lover, Claude. Uil
sands. however, cannot let sentiment In
terfere with business.
Here Is a fine position for a trusting
brigand. Krljole attempts to cash the
check Desmond has given him and Is
promptly told by the official that the
paper I worthless. Desmond has put one
over on the fellow brigand. Claude, who
lias hoped to raise a loan, comes Into the
bank and encounters the brigand. Their
mutual hatred of Desmond gives them a
bond of Interest and they resolve to
pursue the villain.
Making a desperate effort to catch the
steamer for Gibraltar. FrIJole and Claude
dash, madly down the pier from which ,
the vessel la sailing. But alas! the ship
has Just cut off and la slowly making
her way out Into the harbor. Too late!
nnd the villain Desmond Is aboard with
Kosamond. laughing at the futile at
tempts of his pursuers to catch the ship.
Villainy has once more triumphed over
virtue. i
To the Intense surpr.se of Claude and
hle side-partner, Don KrUole. the pier
suddenly begins to move through the
water. They cannot understand the cause
for this, but since the ship does not get
any further away from them, the pair
are greatly pleased, and are content to
take what hapoens as a gift of fate.
Aboard the ship there la equal surprise,
for It Is not often that a flighty pier
takes It Inlo Its head to fail after a de
parting vessel.
Below the water we see the explanation
of the pier's strange action. A diver has
been sent down to search for a pocket
book whk-b some woman passenger
thought she had dropped overboard. And
with the diver is was a case of out of
sight, out of mind. The crew forgets him
and when the sterner moves out It pulls
the flimsy ler alon with It. Thus a
seeming rnirack' U very gtmply explained.
"I'm the boy!' cries Desperate Des
mond, "but I haven't the strength of
Gibraltar." The villain Is a prisoner in
the hands of Claude, and when the
chip reaches Gibraltar he will be turned
over to the military officials, who may
be expected to give him a short shift.
It is a happy moment tor the lovers
when the great rock appears above the
horizon. What happens at Gibraltar will
be shown tomorrow.-
