Ow! The Consul's hand Is now clamped
firmly In the official seal, which Des
mond had been stealthily moving along
the table with his stories of great
diplomatic secrets, with his stories of
great diplomatic series. The poor old
Consul now sees rlearly that he was a
fool to be deceived by such a line of
talk but, as usual, repentance comes a
little bit too late.

Having the Consul In his power, Des
mond at once orders him to ring for the
gallant sailors who have been landed to
protect the Consulate. Although the Con
sul knows that foul play la afoot, he can
not help obeying, as he feels the terrific
preaure slowly Increase upon his
wretched fingers. It is a great-victory
for Desmond, and no wonder that he
smiles broadly.
