friendly to the buying side because the
market ha held firm In face of tha bear
ish conditions In tha nnrthirnt and tha
moat flattering Argentina report. Tha
feeling Is that It will be easier to advance
valuta after tha new year open, espe
cially should any decline come today or
tomorrow. The advance In corn was a
real help In strengthening wheat.

December corn contracts yesterday eased

stock market. The movement aa a whole
waa not large. In the fore Dart of the

l.nlon Pacific and united mates steel In
particular showed the effects of pressure
exerted by the bears In the expectation
of continuing trade decline. The busi
ness developed Increasing strength as the
aey progressed.
The stocks which showed pronounced
strength were Issues which seldom take
a prominent part la trading. Rock Island
preferred roe t points and New York
Central nearly as much. Interborough
Metropolitan stocks and bonds developed
strength. Mackay company was decidedly
weak, although It recovered most of Its
loss of 4hi points before the end of the
day.
Conditions In tba money market were of
unusual Interest on this, the Isat loaning
day of the year. There was no hint of
the year-end flurry which Is often ex
perienced. Call money did not rise above
4 per cent, as compered with 7 per cent
on the last loaning day of 110. In Berlin,

ncrease of 8,700 head as compared with

with the same period a year ago. ,
Kecelpts this week having been so im-
eral It was apparent this morning that
packers were not In need of any great
number of additional cattlo this week,
and that they were not disposed to work
very hard to secure anything unless It
was something very desirable. The result
was a slow trade on beef steers, out
Uiat, however, la nothing unusual on a
Friday, when the trade is never expected
to be anything mors than dull or Indif
ferent. The pricea paid rangea irom
steady to a little easier, soma .of the
same cattle that were here yesterday
selling 6o lower today.
Cows and heifers did not present any
especially new or interesting features.
