Kverywhere we have been

waa an appeal to coma early, coma often

However, that there was much early

know some people who absolutely decided
days and oaye ago that on the Satur
day before Christmas they positively
would not go down town at all.
Itow materialistic how very physical,
our Chrlstmaa times have become.
The IYotoatant church (outside the
Episcopal and Lutheran church) scarcely
even go to church on Chrlstmaa Day, get
ting alt the religious part ot the affair
out of the vay, so that there will be
nothing "unpleasant" to do on Chrlstmaa
Dayl
Of course. If Chrlstmaa Day fall a on
Sunday, u Is religiously observed, but If
not, tew indeed are the Chrlstmaa Day
church services in those churches which
are not of tho Roman Catholic or Epis
copal or Lutheran branches of the fulth.
Yet these devout church members who
get the Chrlstmus services over, the
Sunday before Christmas? fall not to
celebrate the Advent season of Santa
Ciaus on Christmas Day.
In faot. Santa Claua rather than the
Rabe of Bethlehem seems to be the pat

Christmas to the Musicians
Love. If It were not for that, the
would be no permanent Chrlat'rnas.
It Is not only the spirit of giving, for
often the gifts one receives lire the gifts
which would have been sent to someone
else. As a writer in Harper's Magaxlne
saya: "Forgive us our Christmas, as we
forgive those that Chrlstmaa against us."
(This revised version waa published In
the Chrlstmaa "Lite").
There la the danger of overlooking the
true thought about Christmas, just a
there la about other feasts. Aa a friend
said the other night, when we were dis
cussing this subject, "we have no holi
days any more, they are all holidays."
Our Christmas Day la a day of feasting,
ot filling the inner man with dainties, of
receiving presents, (for we far oftener
hear the remark, "What did you get?"
than the remark "Whnt did you give?"
Notice this, tomorrow, just aee how many
times you will be asked what you "got,"
compared to the number of times you
are asked what you "gave." The Christ
mas Day theater la always crowded: the
Chrlstmaa Day party la always on hand.
And yet ChrlstmaJ Day waa once a holy
day, and the festlvitlea began the next
day, BL Stephen's Day, or Boxing Day
and lu '"ye olden time" laated for twelve
days, till Twelfth Night.
Bo It la with Thanksgiving. Who ever
thlnka of Thanksgiving as anything but a
Foot-ball festival and a great Dinner?
Turkey Is the sacrifice ot the day; and
the football is Its sphere.
Fourth of July Is a national day.though
not a holy day, and yet It celebrates the
holloHt thing one can think of in relation
to ' man Liberty, and Independence ot
Mind and Body and Estate. We celebrate
it with baseball games and picnics and
fireworks and explosions, and accidents
and deaths.
KaMer Monday we do not notice at all,
and ICastcr Sunday Is the millinery show
at the church parade, and the annual
visitation to the church of tbosa who do
not go at other times, that Is, ot course
providing the day Is fine, and the clothes
came on Saturday night.
The Chrlstmaa thought la much, In dan
ger of being overlooked In the modern
craxe for expensive and extravagant giv
ing of presents, which one aa a rule,
really cannot afford, and Kdmund Ham
ilton Sears, who was a Unitarian minister
In Massachusetts some plxty or seventy
years ago, suggested by the true Chrlst
maa Idea In one of his several beautiful
Chrltmas hymns when he wote of angels
who sang the flint tidings to the shrpards
In the Judaean fields:
"Still through the cloven skies they come
With peaceful wings unfurled.

Beneath the angel-straln have rolled
Two thousand year of wrong:
And man. at war with man. hears not
