Contract Letting;.
Clly Clerk Frank Good and the officials
generally are not satisfied with the re
turn of bldi on supplies for the tomln
year. In fact, the city officials claim
that unless more bids are received thero
will be little or no competition at the
awarding of the contract for supplies and
the city will be mulcted out of an addi
tional sum of money that might bo saved.
The bids called for embrace offors on
supplies for the; mayor's office, tax com
missioner's office, treasurer's office, city
clerk's office, rlty attorney's office and
the deportments bf fir and police, health,
street commissioner, engineering and city
physician. The purchase of theno sup
plies Is by law advertised In the official
paper of tho city, but mnny fay that
there does not seem to ho aufflrlont pub
licity given not withstanding;.
As a runseiueuce In years past tho clly
has been compelled to award the con
tracts for supplies to bidders who bank:
upon the fact that there will be UUlo or
no competition.
Deputy Clly Clerk John Fennell raid
yesterday that much money might be
saved to the city If more publicity wera
given to the announcements of the sup

week of January. The bids will bo re
ceived up to the hour of S o'clock on

Fight an t. Nicholas' Day.
There Is a trsdltlon that the good St.
Nicholas In his dsy encouraged mirth
fulness of spirit, but It Is hardly to ho

and John Semsendy, five of his devotee
held rather vociferous memorial services
In his honor In the shadow of a saloon
at Twenty-sixth and P streets. '
The five men. who ara said - to h.
Roumanians, had Inaugurated the cele

In notations more spirited than spiritual,
