Prlcea Board of Trade,
CHICAGO, bee. 111. Despite the bullish
nature of the government report the
wheat market today closed weak. Mis
leading reports as to a break in prlcea

the setback. Latest trading here varied

who had attached large importance to
the government estimates. Accordingly
selling set In on a heavy scale and hung
like a weight on the market for the rest
of the dev.
Argentina advices seemed badly con

NEW YORK, Deo. 19. Stubborn reslst-
ance was offered in the stock market to
day o the renewal of the attack which
depressed prices yesterday. Tha bears
naa the Wabash receivership to lien
them.
But the market Dosaessed a degree of
underlying strength which put to naught
the efforts cf the bears. Prlcea fell off
after the opening, but declines among the
standard issues were ems 1 1,
Interest centered In the Wahash ae-
curltlea at the opening, although no vio
lent oecllnee were expected, since Wall
street was too well acquainted with the
road's financial condition to be taken
off its guard. The declines of the com
mon and preferred stock and the 4 per
cent bonds ranged between 1 nnd 2 points.
The common stock touched 64, the lowest
price since 1907. and the preferred 14U.
the lowest In three years. The bonds fell
to CO.
The state iirnt that arranaementa had
been mode for tiayment of the Interest
on the bnnda on January 1 led to heavy
buying of these securities, which rose
to w, a gain or 2' 4 on the day. Both
classes of the stock made partial recoveries.
United Htates Pteel touched 69'i. an
overnight gtln of 14 and the highest
price since Heptemher. I-ehlgh Valley's
recent advance to the accompaniment of
reports of a possible extra distribution
to stockholders was halted. Specialties,
Including the fertilizer shares, Interna
tional Harvester, National Biscuit, Amer
ce n Meet Hugar and name of the In-
deMndenl steel companies, made good
gains.
Business was active and broad In the
bond market. Total sales, par value, 14,-

SH REP Two separate markets ..i .1
for good and medium classes of sheep
and lambs, attractive corn-feds ruling
active, steady to stronger In spots, while
me common armies proved rather slow,
with trend to values earlier. Discrimina
tion In packing circles was more plainly
iiuwn man rerenny ana tne spreads be
tween fair and well conditioned stuff
widened more or less. One of the reasons
lor-tnis pnase or the trade was found In
the character of sunrilv. The Hiimniad
total of 6.&H) head consisted largely of
e....i i-i.iiioiieu eiocn.
In fat lambs a 36.00 top was 'made on
some strictly choice nutlve.t, the best fed
westerns selling tip to 85.80. Fair to good
fat lambs landed below 35.60 in most
Instances, 85.25 buying offerings that had
left the strong weight feeder class several
weeks ago.
Matured muttons moved within spreads
almost as wide as those apparent In the
lamb market, but the inquiry for bulk of
wethers, ewes, etc., seemed to be more
responsive than the demand for lambs.
Extra good lUO-pound fed western wethers
reacnea 4.w ana a dozen head of 197
pound natives also landed at the even
money. The natives were show sheep,
pure-bred Cotswolds. Fat ewes sold all
the way from 33.65 down to less than
3X00, but anything moving under 83.28
lacked finish. There were not many
yearlings on sale, 84.50tf4.75 helng quota
ble for something hlnh-irrRrte in this linn
Nothing happened in the feeder market
early for the reason that supplies were
very scanty. Firm prices were paid for
the few bunches that moved on country
orders late in the session and the situa
tion as a whole remained unchanged.
Yesterday's entire feeder buy amounted
to 4.0U0 head.
