the success of the British team attended
ths initial meeting of ths club, which

Courcy Laf fan, secretary of ths British
Olympic council and P. L. Fisher, secre
tary of ths Amateur Athletic association.
Swedes Are at Wo,rk.
Tha Swedes have already started on ths
tryouts for the Olympic games and surely
by next July they ought to know the
strength of the team. While the other
nations are Indulging ln the winter torpor
the Swedes will be preparing themselves
for the battle. Above all things It ap
pears they have grown keen on winning
ths two all-around competitions and spe
cial contestants are already tunod up for
the events. They say they frightened
the best America could produce out of
the Pentathlon in Athens snd they- ars
going: to do the same this time. Thore
will be a Pentathlon and Docathlon, the
latter being: composed of ten events, tho
first five of which will be contested on
July 15 and the remaining five on the
following day. Recently at Uotlienberr
there was the first tryout and thres of
the man put up a fine all around showing,
which it repeated next July . will , un
doubtedly leave the palm with Bweden.
The competitors were classed as .A, B
and C. The winner of the 100 meters did
11V4 seconds and In the running broad
jump the winner cleared twenty-one feet
three and three-eighths Inches, while ths
second man in tha latter beat twenty feet
In the sixteen-pound shot ths best put
was forty-two feet five Inches and the
winning height In the running high jump
was five feet seven Inches. The discus
was sent scaling 124 feet eight inches and
the man In the pole vault got over nine
feet sixteen Inches. About ths poorest
performance was that of the 1.009 meters,
which wag won In 4 minutes 68 seconds,
but this was more than counter-balanced
In the javelin, the distance accomplished
being 180 feet 8H Inches, Hurdling; is one
of the departments in which the Swedes
are weak, and for the 120-yard high
obstacles the time returned was 1844 sec
onds. The 400 meters was wan In liyt
seconds.
The seoonds In all these events, while
not up to the standard, meant that to
beat them would take a good man all
around. In the javelin the second string;
did 141 feet 8 inches, and In the dlaous
114 feet 10 Inches. The second best shot
putter sent the sphere 17 feet I luches and
he was only a fraction behind In the
running high jump. For the 1,600 meters
the second man came home . In 6:2.
and there was more than twenty sec
onds between himself and the third man.
It was notable that the third man, who
was away In the ruck In the majority of
the events, did tha best performance in
ths running high jump by NColtil over
6 feet 9 inches, and his throw with the
javelin was 141 ftet 4Vt Inches. This same
man did lltt seoonds for ths 109 meters
and Jumped 19 feet t Inches in tbe run
ning broad.
Bridal Party Fails

CUMJ3KRLAND, Md.. Dec. It. After
the First Presbyterian church here had
filled with wedding guests and the pro
cessional had been played, but no bridal
party hud appeared. Rev. Dr. James E.
Moffatt the pastor, announced that the
wedding of George Lay aid Clifton of
Baltimore and Mlts Marlon Amlck.
daughter of Arthur Hammon Amlck, a
business man of this city, had been post
poned because of the sudden illness of the
groom and ot tha bride-elect's mother.
They collapsed simultaneously st the
Amlck home. Late tonight It was said
the marriage would be performed before
morning if Clifton recovered sufficiently.
The wedding was tn have been In de
fiance of the "thirteen" superstition. Ths
couple met, becume engsged and planned
to be married on the thirteenth day of the
mouth. The prenuptial parties were made
up of thirteen persons.

quarrel with her husband today, Mrs.
Helen Smith, wife of a groceryman. gave
iter two sons, Lloyd, aged I, and Karl,
aged S, strychnine In capsules and then
drank of the poison herself. The taother
died an hour afterwards. Earl ran to a
nearby police station to tell the officers
his mother was ill. He did not meutlon
the capsules he and his brother had
taken. After physicians had worked some
time on the mother the nons told ot their
mother giving thra "medicine. The
boys will recover.
