Labor Leaders Tnllc.v
of Settling Strikes
Nii'.V YORK. Doc. T.-At a meeting of
labor leaders here today In an endeavor to
settle the dispute between the metal
workers and carpenters and Joiners theru
was much Informal discussion of the Me
Nainara confessions and their effect upon
unionism. While it could not be ascer
tained whether the matter was brought
up In 'Hie meeting, there was much talk
outside concerning a country-wide effort
to settlo all existing strikes Immediately
with a view to offsetting the "present cry
against unionism."
Among those present at tho meeting
were W. D. lluber o Indlanapolia, presi
dent of the Brotherhood of Carpenters
and Joiners; M. O. Sullivan of Pitts
burgh, president tit the Amalgamated
Sheet Metal Workers; Gxorgo flodrick of
Laporle, Ind., president of the Brother
hood of Painters; o. V. Tveltmoe. presi
dent of tho California Federation of
Labor, and James Short of Chicago, presi
dent of the building trudes department of
the federation.
One leader waa quoted aa saying that
If the attempt to settle all strikes was
successful "labor would have u chance to
offset the present outcry agaitiut union
ism." Not only did tho leuders seem to want
to settlo all existing labur troubles, but
it was suggested In the informal tulks
that If all wurrlng labor unions could
hold a conference and perhaps settle their
difficulties in an anucublo way, a world
of good might result.
(me of those who took part in tba ses
sion today expressed bis belief that the
matter finally would be settled when
Samuel Gompers, president of the Ameri
can Federation of Labor, returns here to
morrow or next day to take part In the
conference.
