SHEEP Some) reaction developed In fat
sneep and lamb trade, but only a portion
of yesterday's severe decline was re
gained. It was an ' uneven market at
strong to higher levels. Improvement be
ing due to prompt curtailment of supply.
Only 6.000 head arrived and bulk of this
estimate consisted of offerings that were
not very attractive for slaughter. Strings
properly fed out moved first, leaving a
10 o'clock assortment of half-flnlrVd
varieties running down from pretty lair
killing stuff to feeders. .
Better classes of fat stock drew prices
larcely lOfeloc above those of yesterday,
fat lambs of western origin reaching 80.75,
and fat yearlings bringing as much as
84.7"a. The yearlings were handy and
choice, and both sales - noted serve to
give an accurate Idea of top values now
In force. HtronK weight warmed-up lambs
and big, heavy natives were neglected
mure or less by packers and had to sell
In crration fashion around and under the
8S.00 mark.
Hat wether nnd ewe trade held only
limited display, but moxt matured mut
tons met with a demand equally as ac
tive as the inquiry for good lamb?, and
higher prices were usually obtained for
anything fit to kill. Near prime fed
western ewes landed at M.I and a small
bunch of natives sold at 63.60. Well con
dltloned wethers were quotable around
83.60, and anything passing this figure
would have to be high-grade. Western
packers anticipate a raft of natives to
supply their . needs as soon as stormy
weather sets In. and are naturally buy
ing cautiously in the meantime, produc
ing a market subject to quick changes.
Feeders are still dribbling back Into
the country for a final finish and total
amount of business today was made up
of a few IOO to 250-pound purchases.
Prices remained firm and the demand
seemed fairly active. Strong weight
feeder lambs Are selling around 34 50
4.66, while ewes costing J2.75t3.00 show
very fair action. Two days' feeder pur
chase amounts to only 3,000 head.

Of Fond In Cold Storage for
bond of People.
WA8HINGTON. Dec. .-"The con
sumers pay a dollar for food; the farmer
gets less than fifty cents for It. Who
gets the rest?"
That is the question which Secretary
Wilson of the Department of Agriculture
asked today in h i annual report. The
secretary does not attempt to answer It.
He does explain In some detail the re
sults of an investigation his department
has Just concluded Into the effect of cold
storage on the wholesomeness and costs
of food. , Ills Investigation leads him to
recommend publicity for the amount of
food In cold storage,' Just as the depart
ment. now gives publicity to the con
dition of crops from month to month.
Instead of food remaining In storage
for longer than a year or two years, as
a rule, the secretary declares that his
Investigation showed that "receipts Into
cold storage are entirely or very nearly
exhausted by the deliveries out of cold
storage within ten months."
Long storage is the exception, the sec
retary asserts. Warehousemen explained
to the department that excessively Ions
storage was due to lawsuits and other
circumstances of an uncommercial
nature. The cost of storage. Including
storage charge, interest and Insurance,
Is considered as a barrier to very long;
storage.
Effect of Cold Storaar.
Cold storage, the secretary reports, has
raised the coBt of living by Increasing
the annual price level for butter and
ggs.
The secretary says that an examination
of the record of prices gives a "sus
picion" that there has been much specu
lation In some years by the men who
keep commodities in cold storage.
He refers to "an apparent mistake" of
the storage men In over-estimating tho
consumption of eggs by the publlo at
exorbitant prices last winter, with the
result that In the spring the storage men
had to sell eggs at remarkably low
prices and send abroad th largest
amount ot eggs ever exported in order
to get rid of the supply. The secretary
declares that the warehousemen ought
to be ' required to send to Washington
each month the amount ot commodities
placed In storage bo that the publlo
may be able to Judge ot the future trend
of prices.
A great variety of subjects are dealt
with by the secretary In his report. Ka
says that the day Is not far distant
when the United States will cease to
Import potash. Florida, Kentucky, Ten-
ncssee and Idaho are mentioned as de
positories.

The American systems of renting land
are declared to be faulty and result in
boU robbing. It is suggested that domes
tio animals be kept on farms, even It
the land owner must furnish them, ani
that there be a rotation of crops.
Afte years of experimentation the
department says thu Egyptian cotton
can be grown In southern California and
bulbs In the state of Washington.

of the earth for new plants and getting
them," says Secretary Wilson.
The secretary warns the irrigation
farmers that they must conserve their
soil; that irrigation will bring maximum
crops while the land is new and full of
plant food. But where the crops are sold
year after year Irrigation of Itself will
not assure good results.
