In their claim tor the "Big Eelght" cham
pionship. By their victory over the I'nl
verslty of Illinois, 11 to 0, here today, the
Gophers claim tho western foot ball tile,
as Wisconsin was defeated at Chicago.
Wisconsin played"Mlnnesota a week ugo
for the conference honors, tha game re
uniting In a C to S tie. Neither team had
been defeated this season until today.
Minnesota's triumph ever Illinois was
the result of the bulldog spirit of Rosen
wald and Stevens. After playing an open
gume for the first two periods without
succeesful gains, Minnesota resorted to
the famous shift In the third period.
Hosenwald waa usext as a battering ram.
For nine consecutive plays he plunged
through Illinois' line, ga.nlng from eight
to ton yards on every attack. When
within two yards of Illinois goal he tore
through for Minnesota's first touchdown.
Morrell failed to kick goal. In the final
period Stevens shot a perfect forward
