This is the smallest for the tlrst halt or any week in a long time. Still there Is a gain as compared with a year ago of over .0W head. In spite of the fact that recelDts ware far from burdensome the market as a whole was very, slow and unsatis factory from start to finish. In the first place the quality of tho cattle was not very good, the yards being filled with trash, and In tha second place buyers did not appear at' all anxious for any great number. of such cattle as were on sale. Thus is happened that the fore noon passed -with comparatively small amount of business being transacted and it was well along toward midday before buyers and sellers could get together on a trading basis. , As strictly good beef cattle were very scarce the feeling was that anything along that line would command steady prices, but there was very little of that kind on sale. Inferior grades were slow and more or less neglected. Cows and heifers Were anywhere from weak to as much as 10yl5c lower In some cases. Thers were very few really good feed ers and they possibly may not have shown much change, but the tendency on the market was both slow and lower. A fairly large supply occupied the miirket, but much of It lacked quality and finish, toppy offerings being the exception. Warmed-up stuff waa plentiful, vhile bands that were properly fed out riade up only a very modest proportion of, the run. jjome western stubble-fed stock; ar rived, but Instead of being coarse f-nd unattractive, as waa the case last year, these "wheat-finish" strings are show ing up In rather crassy killing cohdi'tljn and are selling well up toward the jrP of the trade. Karly estimate placed tcfll receipts at 11,000 head. Demand for fat kinds of sheop ami lambs opened In healthy form, but paolo lng orders were by no means pressing and prices showed little quotable change, ruling Just about steady. The beat varieties of lambs on sale sold up axil i, ; u at .". i , v. inv.A.a,Ann ji V n. Tv.au, v-.bii iii.rt, . i, iru a'-tu.'O suitable for slaughter at $6.00 and less. These prices, while nothing to brag about, are still margined rather high, as compared with eastern values. Chicago top yesterday being $6.66. Matured muttons were purchased In leisurely fashion, a buying attitude that Is entirely natural In view of the fact that the consumptive outlet Is more or less restricted at present. The .approach of Thanksgiving always finds a rapidly filling poultry trade and heavy mutton usually acts poorly when It Is forced to compete with dressed turkeys, chickens, etc. Fed ewes were among the) first fcheep offerings to roll, ranging up to $3.25. tome good yearlings landed well at $4 and toppy wethers oipre none to active within the $3.25ji3.40 spread. Country call for feedors seaanexl fairly active, but business was late In (renting started and scattered early sal-ss affotdtd only a hasy Idea of price levels. All In dications pointed toward a well sustained trade, especially in strong - weights. Feeder lambs weighing over it pounds moved at $4-53 and feeder ewes still ranged under the $3 mark.
